A number of developments have marked the evolution of clinical supervision as a separate specialty since publication of the Standards for Counseling Supervisors in 1990, including accreditation and counselor licensure standards, supervisor credentials, and research on supervision practice and supervisor training, nationally and internationally. Such developments culminated in the development of a statement of Supervision Best Practices Guidelines. The Guidelines are described, followed by suggestions for their implementation and further evolution through research.
A sample of267 American School Counseling Association members were surveyed regarding their current supervision. desire for clinical supervision, and rating of supervision goals. Although a small minority of respondents indicated that they were currently receiving supervision. a majority of respondents indicated a desire to receive supervision. Factor analysis of ratings of supervision goals resulted in 3 factors related to the foci or learning dimensions described in J. M. Bernard's (1997) Discrimination Model. Recommendations for counselor educators and school counselor supervisors are discussed.
D. A. Kolb's (1984) 4 processes of experiential education are presented as guidelines for humanistically based training in group counseling. Specific training activities are described, and recommendations for improving training methods are outlined. The authors present qualitative data obtained from graduate counseling students who participated in these activities and provide recommendations for research.
