In the current study, we investigated the effects of an instructional package (i.e., response prompting, sentence frames) on sentence writing for three middle school participants (ages 12-13) with moderate to severe disabilities. We employed a multiple probe across behaviors design to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention package and also used intermittent probes to assess generalization of sentence writing skills to journal writing activities. Our data indicated that the package was effective and produced variable levels of maintenance and generalized responding for all three participants.
Managing problematic classroom behavior is a challenge for many teachers, regardless of population. The website, www. basicfba.com, designed by researchers at Portland State University, offers teachers and practitioners a wealth of materials to assist them in conducting and maintaining a functional behavior assessment and behavior support plan. Tools are also provided to allow participants to graph and analyze data. This article gives an overview of the resources available and how they may be used.
Learning social studies content is important for all students, including those with severe disabilities. However, there is a limited amount of research that specifically examines teaching social studies to this population of students. Therefore, educators must look to research-based practices in other academic areas (e.g., English language arts) to determine new strategies to teach this important content. Using a multiple probe across participants design, three fifth-grade students with severe disabilities were taught to answer comprehension questions during read-alouds of social studies text using a modified system of least prompts and graphic organizer. Findings indicate all students improved on the correct number of comprehension questions answered independently. Implications for practice and ideas for future research to teach social studies to students with severe disabilities are discussed.
Your guidance, kindness, and insight throughout the process has been invaluable. Your knowledge is impressive. Thank you for adding such thoughtful contributions. It has been a true honor to work with each of you. Next, I would like to acknowledge my former colleagues, students, and families at Clear Creek Elementary that helped to solidify my belief and passion in inclusive and equitable education for all students.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
