Même si les crues en France méditerranéenne ont fait l'objet de nombreux écrits, un aspect restait à aborder au travers d'une approche géographique: celui des personnes qui perdent la vie lors de ces événements. Les auteurs prennent en compte tout ce qui a trait à cette question, directement ou de manière induite. En premier lieu, sont passés en revue les vecteurs naturels générateurs d'ingrédients dangereux: types d'averses à risque, facteurs morphologiques de torrentialité, terroirs exposés aux submersions. Puis, on tente de répertorier et d'analyser la répartition spatiale des crues meurtrières, par sites, par cours d'eau, par département, tout en introduisant le critère de gravité (un événement peut faire davantage de victimes qu'une dizaine d'autres). Cette analyse se complète par l'approche dans le temps, à plusieurs pas: périodes critiques de l'histoire, phases de calme relatif, répartition saisonnière des crues meurtrières, heures de prédilection de ces événements dans le cycle journalier. Dès lors, il n'y avait qu'un pas à franchir pour tenter de cerner les circonstances dans lesquelles se nouent les drames humains, et les catégories sociales les plus victimes de ces aléas.
