Abstract:The reproductive season of tilapia was studied by monthly samplings at Emiliano Zapata dam, Morelos State, Mexico. From February 1999 through February 2000 a sample of 50 fish was taken from the commercial catch (castnet, 6.5 cm of mesh size). The observed sex ratio was 1:1.29 (females:males) (χ²=10.26; p<0.05). The tilapia reached maturity at 151.3 mm (females) and 152.0 mm (males) of total length. Rainy (August) and dry (February) seasons were determined as the breeding period. Fecundity variation was better correlated with length (r=0.7473; p<0.002) than with weight (r=0.7395; p<0.002). The fecundity ranged between 243 and 847 oocytes per fish, with egg diameter from 300 to 3 700 µm. Intensive breeding activity in August and February coincide with phytoplankton biomass increase. Age and growth of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were determined using 1 039 specimens collected in a tropical shallow lake of Mexico, from January to December 1993. Standard length of females ranged from 9.0 to 16.5 cm and males from 8.9 to 14.8 cm. The standard length-weight relationships for all individuals was BW=0.1207 SL 2.469 . The age data, derived from opercular bone readings, were used to estimate the growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation: L ∞ =17.88 cm, K=0.3409, t o =-1.543, and W ∞ =149.21 g. The oldest male and female were 2.5 years old. The sex ratio (female:male) was of 1:1 (χ²=0.02, p>0.05). Rev. Biol. Trop. 56 (2): 875-884. Epub 2008 June 30.
Poecilia sphenops is a native species recently recorded in the Balsas basin and the Amacuzac River in Morelos (Mexico), in which it is abundant and widely distributed. This study analyzed some aspects of the reproductive biology of Poecilia sphenops from the Emiliano Zapata Reservoir, in Central Mexico. Specimens were collected using a 20 m-long seine with a 5 mm mesh size, from January to December 2006. A total of 581 specimens were collected: 407 females (70.0%), 83 males (14.3%) and 91 individuals with no differentiated sex (15.7%). Fish ranged from 20 to 96 mm in total length and 0.01 to 13.07 g in body weight. The female to male sex ratio (4.9:1) deviated significantly from the unity (χ²= 214.2, p<0.05). Monthly variations in gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes and ovarian development stages showed that P. sphenops spawning season occurred between July and October, concurring with the rainy season. Another reproduction peak was registered in February. The largest length registered for males and females was 96 mm and 83 mm, respectively.
Zooplankton from Lake Coatetelco, a shallow tropical reservoir in Morelos State, Mexico, was surveyed monthly through one year. The entire zooplankton community was represented by only five species, with the calanoid Arctodiaptomus dorsalis overwhelmingly dominant throughout the year. A cyclopoid copepod species, one cladoceran species, and two species of rotifers completed the zooplankton. Although some seasonal fluctuations were noted, zooplankton abundance did not appear related to simple physiocochemical parameters; however, there was a general inverse relationship between zooplankton and phytoplankton. Lake Coatetelco (18"45'; 99"20'W) is a shallow (0.49 m mean depth), tropical, 150 ha lake located at 1,100 m in Morelos State, Mexico. The annual mean air
A reproductive analysis of 1 225 specimens of Poeciliopsis gracilis obtained through monthly samples from Coatetelco, a tropical shallow lake in Central Mexico, was made. There was an evident sexual dimorphism, including a difference in body size at the onset of reproduction. Sex ratio deviated significantly from unity. Monthly variations in gonadosomatic (GSI), hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes and ovarian development stages showed that the spawning season was from July to October, coinciding with the rainy season and phytoplankton biomass increase.
