Objetivo: evaluar el impacto de un grupo de autoayuda en pacientes con síndrome metabólico en una unidad médica del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (imss) en el estado de Sonora, México. Métodos: se realizó un estudio cuasiexperimental en la unidad de medicina familiar (umf) no. 66 del imss, Sonora, que incluyó dos grupos de pacientes con criterios de síndrome metabólico, uno experimental y otro de control, los pacientes fueron seleccionados aleatoriamente con características similares. Ambos grupos recibieron atención médica normada, pero al experimental se agregaron sesiones educativas mensuales. Las variables fueron: datos sociodemográficos, estilo de vida, cuadro clínico, perfil biofísico y criterios de síndrome metabólico. El análisis de resultados se realizó con estadística descriptiva y no paramétrica. Resultados: se estudiaron dos grupos conformados por 32 pacientes cada uno, con 71.9% de mujeres en el experimental y 53.1% en el de control. La reducción del peso y circunferencia de cintura resultaron significativas en el grupo experimental (p≤0.05). La evaluación de la capacitación fue de 100%; la metabólica fue menor a 80%, pero la diabetes e hipertensión obtuvieron resultados significativos (p≤0.05). Conclusiones: existe un impacto positivo respecto al control de las enfermedades que componen el síndrome metabólico en pacientes que asisten a grupos de autoayuda.
