Gran parte de la economía de la región centro sur del estado de Chihuahua depende de la agriculcultura. Es una zona semidesértica que utiliza agua de los ríos Conchos y San Pedro para el riego de los cultivos. De éstos, uno de los principales es el cultivo del nogal pecanero. Sin embargo, su producción se puede ver afectada por plagas y enfermedades además de que pueden causar la muerte de los nogales. En este estudio se presenta la distribución espacial de huertas en las que se buscó la presencia de nogales muertos o muriendo, así como sus principales causales: pudrición texana (Phymatotrichum omnivorum), nematodo agallador (Meloidogyne spp), gallina ciega (Phyllophaga spp) y gusano barrenador del tronco (Euplatypus spp). El municipio que más huertas nogaleras presenta es el de Meoqui, sin embargo, es el que menor problemas de mortalidad existen, y Delicias en el que el problema es mayor, al igual que los agentes etiológicos estudiados: Phymatotrichum omnivorum, Meloidogyne spp, Phyllophaga spp y Euplatypus spp tendiendo a concentrarse en su frontera noreste.
La producción de nuez pecanera es una de las actividades agrícolas más importantes en la región centro sur del estado de Chihuaha. La presencia de enfermedades en este cultivo provoca pérdidas en su producción. Se realizó un muestreo bietápico (conglomerados y completamente al azar) para la selección de huertas nogaleras. En este estudio presentamos estimaciones de su impacto económico tanto en la pérdida de árboles como en su producción debido al nematodo Meloidogyne spp. El nematodo puede causar no solo una disminución en la producción, sino también la muerte del nogal, lo cual implicaría pérdidas de $24,000 a $36,000, en 10 años, que tomaría reemplazar el árbol y llevarlo a nivel de producción previa. Con respecto a la producción, se tienen pérdidas, por nogal de 21 ± 7 kg por año, por nogal, en la producción de nuez, es decir, a un precio de $100.00 las pérdidas podrían ascender de $1,400 a $2,800, por nogal por año. Éstas se incrementarían con el paso del tiempo, ya que la producción de los nogales enfermos diminuirá hasta su muerte.
Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch) es el frutal de mayor importancia en la región agrícola de delicias. Chihuahua, ocupando el sitio número uno en la producción de este producto a nivel nacional (SAGARPA, 2018). El nogal es atacado por diferentes microrganismos que causan serios problemas que reducen el rendimiento de los mismos. Es importante conocer algunas características edáficas que favorezcan o condicionen la presencia del nematodo en huertas de nogal, para en base a esta información los productores de nuez puedan prestar más atención al control del nematodo. El objetivo del presente estudio de caso fue determinar cuáles son los factores edáficos que influyen en la presencia del nemátodo Meloidogyne sp en el nogal pecanero. El estudio se llevó a cabo en los municipios de Delicias, Meoqui, Saucillo y Rosales del estado de Chihuahua Figura 1. Se tomaron 243 muestras de suelo de 60 nogaleras de septiembre del 2016 a enero del 2018. Los resultados indican que el nemátodo Meloidogyne sp., no es exclusivo de algún tipo de textura y puede estar presente en diferentes clases texturales de suelo. Se encontró una relación significativa entre la alta concentración de Fósforo-Olsen y un mayor número de árboles con presencia de hembras de Meloidogyne sp. parasitando la raíz del nogal. Se encontró una relación significativa entre la concentración del valor muy bajo de Zinc y la presencia de hembras de Meloidogyne sp. parasitando la raíz del nogal.
La mortalidad en huertas nogaleras establecidas tiene impactos económicos importantes. La prevalencia e identificación de factores asociados a este problema son de suma importancia para la formulación de estrategias para su control. En este estudio mostramos que existe una prevalencia del 31%, de las huertas nogaleras muestreadas, con mortalidad en nogales. Se encontró significancia estadística en la prevalencia de los factores estudiados, con respecto a la mortalidad, en nogales: pudrición texana (Phymatotrichopsis omnivora) (23%), nematodo agallador (Meloidogyne spp) (14%), Gallina ciega (Phyllophaga spp) (35%) y gusano barrenador Euplatypus segnis (Chapuis) (6%). Nuestros resultados demuestran que la prevalencia de mortalidad en huertas nogaleras es multifactorial. Anticipamos que este estudio será un punto de partida para estudios posteriores que busquen la relación entre los diferentes factores etiológicos y permitirá medir la incidencia del problema, así como su impacto económico.
