Beaucoup d'études ont été consacrées aux effets de coopération sur la performance scolaire. La plupart de ces études montrent que les élèves qui coopèrent font plus de progrès que les élèves qui travaillent individuellement (Johnson et al., 1981). Pourtant, pas toutes les expériences ne sont convaincantes. Dans plusieurs expériences, qui ne sont que d'une brève durée, on utilise des tâches artificielles. Un autre problème est que la plupart des étu-des qui ont été réalisées dans des écoles manquent de théorie. Les expériences dont nous parlerons avaient une durée de 4 à 5 mois. Nous avons étudié une tâche réelle et importante, à savoir I'ortographe. En outre, nous voulions savoir comment la coopération favorise la compréhension des règles orthographiques.Largement parlant il y a deux explications, l'une cognitive et l'autre motivationnelle, qui ne s'excluent pas mutuellement. Selon l'expiication cognitive les élèves échangent de l'information, ils se donnent des explications l'un à l'autre, souvent ils épreuvent des conflits sociocognitifs. De cette manière la coopération effectue une meilleure stratégie de penser (dans le cas d'orthographe il s'agit d'une meilleure connaissance d'algorithmes) et par conséquent les élèves améliorent leur performance. Selon l'explication motivationnelle la coopération veut dire qu'il y a une interdépendance entre les élèves. Si un élève ne fait pas de son mieux, il fait tort à son compagnon. Donc la coopération mène à un renforcement additionnel par les compagnons, ce qui effectue un plus grand effort et par conséquent une meilleure performance.Pour tester ces deux explications on a réalisé une expérience dans laquelle on a contrasté un groupe de contrôle dans lequel les élèves travaillaient individuellement et un groupe expérimental où ils travaillaient en dyades. De plus il y avait une troisième condition dans laquelle la réalisation des exercices se faisait individuellement, mais où les élèves exerçaient un contrôle réciproque de leur travail à partir duquel ils pouvaient corriger leurs erreurs. Cette expérience nous fournit l'occasion de répondre aux questions suivantes:1. Est-ce que le feedback donné par les compagnons effectue un progrès en orthographe?2. Est-ce que la combinaison de feedback par les compagnons et de consultation en dyades effectue un effet additionnel sur la performance en comparaison avec le feedback tout seul?3. Le progrès résultant de la coopération peut-il être expliqué par un plus grand effort des élèves et/ou par une meilleure connaissance d'algorithmes?
In a field experiment among 123 second, 133 fourth, and 162 sixth graders we observed improvement in achievement as a consequence of learning in pairs only for the fourth graders. The results suggest that there may be a curvilinear relationship between task difficulty and effectiveness of pair-learning.
