Einmal niedergeschrieben, treibt sich jedes Wort allenthalben wahllos herum, in gleicher Weise bei denen, die es verstehen, wie auch genau so bei denen, die es nicht angeht, und weiß nicht zu sagen, zu wem es kommen sollte und zu wem nicht. Wenn es dann schlecht behandelt und ungerechterweise geschmäht wird, so bedarf es seines Vaters, der ihm helfen sollte: denn selbst kann es weder sich wehren noch sich helfen. Platon' I. Unterscheidet man nach einem Vorschlag des polnischen Literaturwissenschaftlers Janusz Stawinski im terminologischen Vorrat der Literaturwissenschaft den Bereich der »Nomenklatur« vom Bereich der »Terminologie im engeren Sinne«, 2 so wird man den Autor, dessen Tod Roland Barthes im Jahre 1968 den zum Teil gar nicht so recht nicht trauern wollenden (unterbliebenen Literaturwissenschaftlern mitzuteilen sich anheischig machte, 3 und dessen Platon: Phaidros, 275e. Janusz Slawinski: Probleme der literaturwissenschaftlichen Terminologie. In: J. S.: Literatur als System und Prozeß. Übers, v. Rolf Fieguth. München: Nymphenburger Verlagshandlung 1975, S. 65-80. Nach Slawinski umfaßt die Nomenklatur der Literaturwissenschaft »die Namen der zum weitest gefaßten Interessengebiet der Wissenschaft gehörigen und von den Vertretern dieser Wissenschaft allgemein als solche akzeptierten Gegenstände«. Die Terminologie im engeren Sinne umfaßt dagegen »Termini, welche Exponenten des Begriffssystems dieser Wissenschaft oder auch Zeichen sind, deren jedes seinen Sinn aus seiner Stellung innerhalb dieses Systems bezieht«. Das Funktionieren eines Namens der Nomenklatur hängt davon ab, »ob er sich auf bestimmte -das heißt beobachtbare -gegenständliche Daten stützen kann«, das des Terminus dagegen von dessen relationalen Charakter: »er befindet sich unter dem Druck der Bedeutungen der anderen Einheiten desselben >Feldes<. Seinen Sinn zu verstehen heißt so viel wie richtig den Ort zu identifizieren, den er im gesamten Komplex der Termini hat« (S. 66 f.).
