has recently been written (in Fortran) and implemented at this college. So far, more than 100 freshman students have used this simulation successfully as an introduction to qualitative analysis principles. Subsequently they carried out similar, wet procedures in the laboratory. The directions to the student user are simple. Take a flowchart indicating the reagents and separations required for all identifications, call up the program from any computer terminal, and follow' the directions generated. Two cations, assigned at random by the computer, must be identified by answering questions such as "which preparation (or test tube) do you want to work on?" or "what do you want to do next?" Correct addition of the required reagents and completion of any one separation step will generate the output of experimental results, such as "preparation no. 105: yellow solution and preparation no. 106: black precipitate," followed by a very brief explanation of the chemical reactions carried out in each separation or identification step. One of the unique features of the program is that random access to any step within the analytical scheme is provided for. Thus the user, rather than the computer, directs the sequencing of the simulated analysis. An interactive reward-penalty system as well as pacing and timing routines are also incorporated. Yet, core and CPU requirements for execution are kept modest to insure transferability of the program to colleges with small operating systems.Favorable acceptance of this innovative pre-lab exercise by our general chemistry students has been encouraging. Our long range plans are to expand the program to include analytical cation groups 1, 4, and 5 as well as an anion scheme.Copies of the program described, including student instructions, will be furnished upon request.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
