Die nordamerikanischen Friseure sind kein zentrales Thema der historischen Forschung. Nicht einmal dort, wo es um das Kleinbürgertum im internationalen Vergleich geht, tauchen sie auf. Dieses Schicksal teilen sie zweifellos mit vielen anderen Gruppen, trotzdem lohnt es sich, ihnen einen Moment die Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen, denn ihr Beispiel lenkt den Blick auf einige wichtige Fragen.Das Irritierende an den Friseuren in den USA besteht darin, daß sie sich in der Zwischenkriegszeit ganz ähnlich verhielten wie ihre Kollegen in Deutschland. Sie versuchten, den Berufszugang an bestimmte Qualifikationen zu binden, wie z.B. eine Prüfung, den Nachweis einer geregelten Ausbildung, ein Gesundheitszeugnis oder eine Bescheinigung über die charakterliche Eignung. 1 Die Friseure und ihre Berufsverbände konnten sogar in dreizehn Bundesstaaten die Möglichkeit von Mindestpreisen durchsetzen, über die eine qualifizierte Mehrheit aus ihren Reihen entscheiden durfte. 2 Die Notwendigkeit solcher Gesetze wurde sehr unterschiedlich begründet. Als wirkungsvoll bei der gerichtlichen Überprüfung erwies sich vor allem der Anspruch, die öffentliche Gesundheit und Sicherheit zu schützen. Die Friseure standen hier angeblich in einer besonderen Verantwortung, weil sie in direkten Körperkontakt mit ihren Kunden kamen. Es fand sich allerdings sehr wohl auch der Hinweis auf die lange Geschichte des Berufes und seine große historische Bedeutung 3 -ein Argument, das dem Leser deutscher Handwerkszeitungen bis zum Überdruß vertraut ist.Die nordamerikanischen Friseure profilierten sich kaum weniger in der Verteidigung ihres 'Berufsstandes' als ihre deutschen Kollegen, obwohl sie doch aus einem Land stammten, das geradezu als Symbol fur Liberalismus und Individualismus steht. Wie läßt sich das erklären?Bei allem Respekt vor der Arbeit der Friseure kann es hier nicht darum gehen, sich nur mit ihnen zu beschäftigen. Vielmehr soll ein Erklärungsansatz im Rahmen eines breiteren internationalen Vergleichs des selbständigen Kleinbürgertums 4 entwickelt werden, das sich in Deutschland als "Handwerk", in Frankreich als "artisanat" und in den USA als "small business" formierte. Der Zeitpunkt und die Art der Formierung waren jeweils unterschiedlich, die Determinanten dieses Prozesses der Definition, Organisation und Habitusprägung gilt es herauszuarbeiten. Bislang erscheint die Materialgrundlage für einen "vollen" Vergleich vor allem mit den USA allerdings als zu schmal. Es geht hier deshalb in erster Linie darum, Kategorien zu entwickeln und auf ihre Brauchbarkeit hin zu prüfen, die einen wertvollen Ertrag für die 1 Forschung über das selbständige Kleinbürgertum versprechen und mit denen komparative Arbeiten operieren können. 5 Das Vorgehen beruht zunächst auf der Annahme, daß die soziale und ökonomische Lage der kleinen Selbständigen in den industrialisierten Staaten Europas und Amerikas genügend wichtige Gemeinsamkeiten aufwies, so daß die Vergleichbarkeit gewährleistet ist, auch wenn zwischen den einzelnen Staaten deutliche Unterschiede bestanden.
