Abstract
At the beginning of the 1980s diversification appeared in developed countries, such as France, as an alternative to the model that prevailed in the 1950s. This model was founded on ‘modern’ agriculture, through the optimization of farming conditions and the rationalisation of technical and economic choices. There quickly arose resistance movements to this ‘dominant’ agriculture: the existence of pan‐time farmers and of alternative movements of an ‘ecological’ tendency. Similarly, movements linked to the defence of ‘locality’ were themselves expressions of diversity.
These limits to the processes of simplification and intensification illustrate the need for an appraisal of regional and micro‐regional specificities, and of the balance of production from the global to the local level. The general economic situation, including an agricultural policy based on diversification, has helped to mobilise professional networks in defence of divergent interests. In this situation of internal crises, the social position of groups depends on their capacity to adapt to variable economic situations and on their power to impose and legitimate forms of diversification.
