Toutes sortes d’espaces sont impliqués dans une lettre. Objet matériel, couvert de signes et de blancs significatifs, la lettre quitte la main d’un destinateur pour tomber sous le ragard d’un destinataire, et par ce voyage met en fictive présence deux personnes réellement éloignées. Au sein de la respublica literaria, elle se fait porteuse des valeurs humainistes communes à un réseau international de savants et de lettrés. Mais la lettre sait aussi intérioriser l’espace, rendre compte du lieu où elle est écrite (lettre de voyage), imaginer le lieu où elle est expédiée, et peupler ces lieux de figures virtuelles, nées de véritables transferts ou échanges de personnalité. Le roman par lettre (Guilleragues, Boursault et d’autres) a su jouer de ces effets de vraisemblance. D’autre part le texte épistolaire est lui-même un champ fictif où s’affrontent les interlocuteurs, une alcôve où s’embrassent les amants, un théâtre où se déploie un jeu de rôles et de gestes à chaque occasion renouvelé, un espace de représentations où se substituent l’un à l’autre l’abstrait et le concret.
