The objective of this chapter is to provide a review of the health effects of aluminum, the most abundant metal and the third most abundant element in the earth's crust. Major topics covered include the physical and chemical properties of aluminum, pharmacokinetics, and aluminum toxicity in experimental and epidemiological studies. The medical literature on respiratory diseases attributable to aluminum exposure and the potential role of aluminum in the etiology of various neurological disorders are discussed. A brief overview of aluminum nanoparticles is also discussed.
