Failure modes of swept spot friction welds in lap-shear specimens of alclad 2024-T3 aluminum sheets are first investigated based on experimental observations. Optical and scanning electron micrographs of the welds before and after failure under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions are examined. Experimental results show that the failure modes of the welds under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions are quite different. Failure modes of swept spot friction welds depend considerably on the weld geometry, microstructure, and load amplitude. A fatigue crack growth model based on the paths of the dominant kinked fatigue cracks is developed to estimate the fatigue lives of the spot friction welds. The global and local stress intensity factors for finite kinked cracks, the stress intensity factors for finite transverse cracks, and the Paris law for fatigue crack propagation are used. The fatigue life estimations agree well with the experimental results.
As a tubing adapter for submarine oil and gas development, super duplex stainless steel usually needs to be connected with other different metals. In the welding process, the welding parameters have a great influence on the stress and deformation of the welded joint. Since there are many welding parameters and the welding parameters interact with each other, changing one parameter requires changing one or more parameters to produce the expected results. Therefore, it is not easy to find an optimal parameter combination to meet the assembly requirements and improve the joint quality. Based on the response surface method, this paper mainly evaluates the influence of welding current, welding voltage and welding speed on the equivalent stress and overall deformation of SAF 2507/316L plasma arc welded joints. The regression model equations of equivalent stress and overall deformation with respect to welding parameters are obtained. The optimal predicted welding parameters output from the regression equation are very close to the simulated values. The Simufact Welding software was used for numerical simulation, and the influence of parameter combinations based on response surface test design on the transverse, longitudinal and Z-direction deformation of SAF 2507/316L plasma arc welded joints was studied. The accuracy of the simulation results was verified by experiments.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
