Cet article présente et questionne l’historiographie américaine sur le racial passing , ce processus par lequel un individu initialement rattaché à une catégorie raciale change clandestinement d’affiliation et « passe pour » membre d’un autre groupe racial. La lecture croisée de trois ouvrages récents ( A Chosen Exile d’Allyson Hobbs, L’Esclave qui devint millionnaire de Karl Jacoby et Passing Strange de Martha Sandweis) soulève en particulier trois axes de réflexion. Le premier traite des liens entre passing et mobilités sociales ; le deuxième analyse les moyens et les effets du passing sur l’intimité du « passeur » ; enfin le troisième met en lumière les enjeux méthodologiques soulevés par le dévoilement d’un phénomène social par définition caché.
