In a period of approximately 20 years of pediatric practice, we have seen six cases and probably a few more that have slipped from our memory, of what we have labeled "gas leak syndrome." Recently, another such case occurred; and, as we thought about it and browsed through the literature (very little written on this subject), we decided to avail ourselves of your Letters to the Editor section. The typical case is as follows: the patient is usually ill with some minor illness which forces confinement for a 3- or 4-day period.
