Al iniciar éste curso creo necesario y más aun imprescindible, a manera de introito, referir en forma muy somera el perfil histórico de la neurología, la cual connota una función muy importante desde el punto de vista de la universalidad de los conocimientos humanos.En el Edwing Smith's Papyrus 1 se recuerda el caso de un médico egipicio quien 20 centurias antes de la era cristiana observava un paciente cuya rigidez de cuello (meningitis?) impedíanle mirar hacia el tórax. En el libro de Dana 2 se reproduce un bajo-relieve de 3000 a 4000 años de antigüedad referido por primera vez por Ore Hamburger y publicado más tarde por Roy L. Moodie en su "Paleopathology" referente a la parálisis infantil. Un stele egipcio del período hieroglífico de 18 a dinastía (1580-1350 A.C.) muestra también un miembro atrofiado, secuencia probable de la parálisis infantil (Carlsberg Glypotek).En el período griego recordemos a Pitágoras (580-489 A.C.) filó-sofo que en forma definitiva asignó la función cerebral como asiento de la razón. Su hijo Alemeon habría disecado el cerebro y conocido los nervios ópticos; Empédocles habría conocido la cóclea; Anaxágoras distinguió entre los órganos periféricos y centrales del sensorio; Demócrito usó las palabras dura y pía-madre para las membranas encefálicas.Recordemos, además, que ya Homero habia descripto, en la Ilíada, los movimientos rotatorios del caballo, herido en el cerebro por una flecha y que ciertas momias egipcias revelaban enfermedad de Pott, artritis deformante, ateromas arteriales, acondroplas : a, etc. (Dana). Los grandes poetas trágicos griegos Sófocles y Eurípides fueron los precursores prehipocráticos en el arte, de ciertos aspectos neuro-psiquátricos de los hombres y hasta de los dioses mitológicos. Los asirio-bábilónicos y los hebreos describieron la epilépsia, o ataque, como posesión por los demonios (demonopatía).
