Visualizing structures smaller than the eye can see has been a driving force in scientific research since the invention of the optical microscope. Here, we use a network of neural networks to create a neural lens that has the ability to transform 20× optical microscope images into a resolution comparable to a 1500× scanning electron microscope image. In addition to magnification, the neural lens simultaneously identifies the types of objects present, and hence can label, colour-enhance and remove specific types of objects in the magnified image. The neural lens was used for the imaging of Iva xanthiifolia and Galanthus pollen grains, showing the potential for low cost, non-destructive, highresolution microscopy with automatic image processing.

Whilst advances in lasers now allow the processing of practically any material, further optimisation in precision and efficiency is highly desirable, in particular via the development of real-time detection and feedback systems. Here, we demonstrate the application of neural networks for system monitoring via visual observation of the work-piece during laser processing. Specifically, we show quantification of unintended laser beam modifications, namely translation and rotation, along with real-time closed-loop feedback capable of halting laser processing immediately after machining through a ∼450 nm thick copper layer. We show that this approach can detect translations in beam position that are smaller than the pixels of the camera used for observation. We also show a method of data augmentation that can be used to significantly reduce the quantity of experimental data needed for training a neural network. Unintentional beam translations and rotations are detected concurrently, hence demonstrating the feasibility for simultaneous identification of many laser machining parameters. Neural networks are an ideal solution, as they require zero understanding of the physical properties of laser machining, and instead are trained directly from experimental data.

Tissue engineering is a branch of regenerative medicine which harnesses biomaterial and stem cell research to utilise the body's natural healing responses to regenerate tissue and organs. There remain many unanswered questions in tissue engineering, with optimal biomaterial designs still to be developed and a lack of adequate stem cell knowledge limiting successful application. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), and deep learning specifically, offer the potential to improve both scientific understanding and clinical outcome in regenerative medicine. With enhanced perception of how to integrate artificial intelligence into current research and clinical practice, AI offers an invaluable tool to improve patient outcome.
