Our exploratory research focuses on the possible relations between tourism and the mobility of people, using short longitudinal data for mobility dimensions during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of these is real-time, exhaustive type data, published by Google, about the mobility of people in six different dimensions, (retail, parks, residential, workplace, grocery, and transit). The aim is to analyze the directional, intensity, causal, and complex interplay between the statistical data of tourism and mobility data for Romanian counties. The main objective is to determine if real-world big data can be linked with tourism arrivals in the first 14 months of the pandemic. We have found, using correlations, factorial analysis (PCA), regression models, and SEM, that there are strong and/or medium relationships between retail and parks and overnights, and weak or no relations between other mobility dimensions (workplace, transit). By applying factorial analysis (PCA), we have regrouped the six Google Mobility dimensions into two new factors that are good predictors for Romanian tourism at the county location. These findings can help provide a better understanding of the relationship between the real movement of people in different urban areas and the tourism phenomenon: the GM parks dimension best predicts tourism indicators (overnights), the GM residential dimension correlates inversely with the tourism indicator, and the rest of the GM indices are generally weak predictors for tourism. A more complex analysis could signal the potential and the character of tourism in different destinations, by territorially and chronologically determining the GM indices that are better linked with the tourism statistical indicators. Further research is required to establish forecasting models using Google Mobility data.
Nagy beNedeK-udVari beáta-leNgyel imre Újraiparosodás Kelet-Közép-európábanújraéledő centrum-periféria munkamegosztás? Néhány éve a fejlett országok gazdaságfejlesztési elképzelései között előtérbe került az újraiparosítás, részben a 2008. évi válságra, részben a negyedik ipari forradalomhoz kapcsolódó technológiai átalakulásra, szerkezetváltásra adott egyik gazdaságpolitikai válaszként.
The main objective of the present study is to examine the changes in national tourism supply and to find out whether these changes are quantifiable or not. Research analysis shows that – contrary to our hypotheses/expectations – tourism is relatively weakly connected to places, to the localization of traditional resources. Results reveal how relationships between tourism factors and resources and tourism supply and demand have changed. While tourism trends become more strongly connected to cultural resources, natural resources tend to lose ground. Post-industrial trends – such as the secondary value of the material environment, the reinterpretation of attractions and authenticity, the appearance of new contents and interpretations, etc. – are barely traceable in the Romanian statistical figures on tourism. At the same time, we have not encountered any studies of such extent on Romanian tourism and its resources or any large statistical analyses involving all settlements (all administrative units) from Romania; therefore, the current research can serve to fill this gap and offer new findings on the topic.
To meet the requirements of global competition, the European Union (EU) places particular emphasis on the development of knowledge‑intensive, innovative industries. The pharmaceutical industry, as a high‑tech manufacturing subsection, has a long tradition in Europe. However, the distribution of pharmaceutical industry employment and value added is not even within the Union, and its temporal dynamics is also different. In the present paper, I examine the change of the structure of the pharmaceutical industry within the Union using country groups. I compare the development of pharmaceutical industry employment in the period between 2000 and 2018 in three country groups. I use a simple decomposition method to separate the effects of sector growth and labor productivity change on the change of pharmaceutical employment to find out how similarly this industry evolved in the different country groups. The analysis shows that while in the 12 original, i.e., pre–2004, member states (Core EU), employment slightly increased alongside a considerable increase in value added, the nine post‑socialist countries (PS9) achieved slightly greater value added expansion combined with substantial employment growth. Meanwhile, the four Visegrád countries (V4) achieved a value added growth similar to the PS9, but an even greater employment growth. This indicates that the part of the pharmaceutical industry operating with higher labor productivity is concentrating in the Core EU countries, while in the less developed post‑socialist countries, the part of the pharmaceutical industry with lower labor productivity is developing.
