The study assessed the use of ICTs among extension agents in Kano State Nigeria. Two hundred and twenty-one (221) extension agents were randomly selected from the 44 local government areas. Data for the study were obtained with the aid of structured questionnaire administered to extension agents. Majority of extension agents were in the age range of 41-50 years. Majority (87.3%) of them were males and married (100%), with family sizes of 5-14 (53.95%). The entire extension agents had formal education including HND (35.8%), OND (33.3%) and secondary school certificate (27.2%). Most of the extension agents had an annual income of N100,000-N300,000, with N376,984 as mean. They were aware and had access to radio, television, telephone, DVD, video, camera, computer, satellite and printer. They however recorded a low usage of the Web, satellite, e-mail, CD-ROM, search engines, scanner, fax and Web publishing. The result also indicates a positive correlation between ICT use and socioeconomic characteristics of the agents; including age, work experience, membership of agricultural associations (p<0.05). It was concluded that the benefits of the ICTs were not fully utilized by extension workers in the state due to some factors associated with low income, ICTs training, awareness and access.
This study investigated the socio-economic factors influencing adoption of dual-purpose cowpea production (DPC) technologies among farmers in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. Data were collected with the use of questionnaire administered to 200 farmers selected randomly. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and step-wise multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that 35.7% of the farmers were within 41-50 years. The largest percentage (24.5%) had a family size within the range of 11-15, with a mean of 8. Majority of the farmers had formal education, ranging from primary to post-secondary. They had more than 1ha of land, with a mean of 2.2ha. They all participated in one form of farmers' organization or the other. The mean adoption rate was 77.5%. The use of improved seeds and insecticides had the highest adoption score (100%). The study analyses the adoption of improved pearl millet production practices by farmers in Borno State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select the sampled farmers. A structured questionnaire was used to interview 292 farmers across 30 villages in six Local Government Areas (LGAs) of two Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) zones. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data generated for the study. Findings on socioeconomic characteristics revealed that a greater proportion of both adopters and non-adopters were of the male gender, married and had farming as a major occupation. Results of ordered logistic regression suggested that farm size, farming experience, household size, extension contact, access to credit and awareness positively influenced adoption; whereas, age, annual income and cost of technology negatively influenced adoption. The most important problems associated with adoption of improved pearl millet production practices in the study area were unavailability of improved seeds, inaccessibility to farm credit and lack of extension support. Therefore, it is recommended that non-governmental organizations should complement government's effort in providing enabling environment for farmers to adopt improved practices through the provision of inputs such as improved seeds, fertilizer and agrochemicals. .
This study aims to develop site index for Teak (Tectona grandis) in Kanya Forest Plantation, Nigeria. Site index is defined as the total height of the dominant or co-dominant trees at an arbitrary index age, it is a method used for quantifying site quality for pure even-aged stands which is essential in growth and yield modelling. The data used in this study were obtained from six different age classes. Five sample plots each were selected across all age classes in which a total of 712 trees were measured, variables measured include total height, diameter at the base, middle, top, and diameter at the breast height were taken from 30 temporary sampled plots of 25x25m approximately from the centre, 180 dominant trees were selected from 712 trees. Basal area and volume of sampled trees were computed. Yield values obtained from the dominant trees are (B = 249.312 m3/ha, D = 196.128 m3/ha, F = 134.976 m3/ha, C = 119.328 m3/ha, E = 100.320 m3/ ha and A = 86.976 m3/ha). The results showed that B was the best and A was the poorest. Seventeen models were generated and paired sampled t-test was used for model validation, comparing the actual and predicted height. Two out of 17 were rejected (significant P<0.05). The first model Hd=12075.346-354.809(Age)+3.448(Age)2-135193.126(1/Age) is the recommended height estimation of Teak in Kanya Forest plantation for its best performance.
