El aumento de la velocidad y del peso por eje que soportan las ruedas de los vehículos ferroviarios ha aumentado la preocupación de los expertos en relación al nacimiento y desarrollo de grietas en las ruedas ferroviarias, así como a la manera de detectar con fiabilidad las mismas de un modo sencillo y económico.Aunque en el mundo del ferrocarril no es frecuente que se produzca un fallo repentino de una rueda, este puede provocar un descarrilamiento, que, aún sin producir víctimas, produce un elevado coste asociado de material. Es por ello necesario identificar las ruedas que contengan grietas antes de que se produzca una rotura frágil.La combinación de las tensiones producidas en la frenada, con las tensiones de fatiga y las tensiones de presión superficial (tensiones Hertzianas) producidas en el servicio de una rueda, pueden iniciar una serie de eventos que pueden derivar en la fractura.Las ruedas ferroviarias son inspeccionadas por ultrasonidos tras su fabricación, siendo el tamaño mínimo de defecto y su posición un valor regulado por diversas normativas. Una vez la rueda entra en servicio no existe ninguna normativa que regule los períodos de inspección ni el tamaño mínimo de defecto y/o su posición.Cada empresa de mantenimiento de trenes, basándose en su experiencia utiliza un intervalo de inspección, así como un criterio para el mismo. En la mayoría de estas empresas la inspección de ruedas en servicio es lenta, manual y no sistemática.En la actualidad no se comercializa ningún sistema automático de detección de grietas en toda la llanta y el velo de la rueda. Si bien sí se comercializan equipos que inspeccionan de manera automática la banda de rodadura hasta una profundidad de alrededor de 5 mm utilizando ondas de ultrasonidos superficiales.
