Ni(Fe)OxHy are the most active catalysts for oxygen evolution in base. For this reason, they are used widely in alkaline electrolyzers. Several open questions remain regarding the reason for their exceptionally high catalytic activity. In this model study, we measure activity trends of mass-selected NiFe nanoparticles for oxygen evolution in 1 M KOH. We complement our activity measurements with electrochemistry-mass spectrometry, taken in operando, and transmission electron microcopy and low energy ion scattering spectroscopy, taken ex situ. Using isotope labelling experiments, we discover that oxygen evolution does not proceed via lattice exchange. Together with particle size trends, the isotope results indicate that oxygen evolution is limited to the near surface region. Using the surface are of the particles, we determine that the turnover frequency is 6.2 ± 1.6 s -1 at an overpotential of 0.3 V, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported for oxygen evolution in alkaline solution.

The recent surge in investigating electrocatalysts for the H2 evolution reaction is based on finding a cheap alternative to Pt. However platinum's excellent catalytic activity means very little catalyst needs to be used. The present study combines model experiments with numerical modeling to determine exactly how little catalyst is needed. Specifically we investigate ultra-low Pt loadings for use in photoelectrochemical H2 evolution using TiO2-Ti-pn + Si photocathodes. At a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , we photocathodically evolve H2 at +465, +450, +350 and +270 mV vs, RHE at Pt loadings of 1000, 200, 50, and 10 ng/cm 2 corresponding to HER overpotentials of η1000ng = 32 mV, η200ng = 46 mV, η50ng = 142 mV, and η10ng = 231 mV. To put this in perspective, if 30% of the world's current annual Pt production was used for H2 evolution catalysis, using a loading of 100 ng/cm 2 and a current of 10 mA/cm 2 would produce 1 TWaverage of H2. The photoelectrochemical data matched the modeling calculations implying that we were near the fundamental maximum in performance for our system. Furthermore modeling indicated that the overpotentials were dominated by mass transfer effects, rather than catalysis unless catalyst loadings were less than 1,000 ng/cm 2 .

Herein we present surface sensitive operando XAS L-edge measurements on IrO/RuO thin films as well as mass-selected RuO and Ru nanoparticles. We observed shifts of the white line XAS peak toward higher energies with applied electrochemical potential. Apart from the case of the metallic Ru nanoparticles, the observed potential dependencies were purely core-level shifts caused by a change in oxidation state, which indicates no structural changes. These findings can be explained by different binding energies of oxygenated species on the surface of IrO and RuO. Simulated XAS spectra show that the average Ir oxidation state change is strongly affected by the coverage of atomic O. The observed shifts in oxidation state suggest that the surface has a high coverage of O at potentials just below the potential where oxygen evolution is exergonic in free energy. This observation is consistent with the notion that the metal-oxygen bond is stronger than ideal.

The immortalized human keratinocyte cell line HaCaT was used to assess the effect of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) on expression of keratin K17. Both IFN-gamma and K17 have been implicated in the pathophysiology of psoriasis. Western and quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analyses demonstrated increasing induction of K17 protein by 48 h exposure to IFN-gamma at concentrations of 10, 50, and 250 U/ml. At 50 U/ml IFN-gamma, immunohistochemical analysis revealed numerous K17-positive foci, whereas in situ hybridization demonstrated K17 message in the majority of cells. In addition, at low (5 U/ml) concentrations of IFN-gamma, cell proliferation and protein synthesis decreased, as determined by 3H-thymidine labeling and 14C-amino acid uptake. These data suggest that aberrant K17 expression observed in psoriatic lesions may be a consequence of IFN-gamma overexpression, and that the HaCaT cell line may be a useful in vitro model system to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Nanoparticles have an immense importance in various fields, such as medicine, catalysis, and various technological applications. Nanoparticles exhibit a significant depression in melting point as their size goes below ≈10 nm. However, nanoparticles are frequently used in high temperature applications such as catalysis where temperatures often exceed several 100 degrees which makes it interesting to study not only the melting temperature depression, but also how the melting progresses through the particle. Using high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, the melting process of gold nanoparticles in the size range of 2–20 nm Au nanoparticles combined with molecular dynamics studies is investigated. A linear dependence of the melting temperature on the inverse particle size is confirmed; electron microscopy imaging reveals that the particles start melting at the surface and the liquid shell formed then rapidly expands to the particle core.
