Introduction: Phantom limb pain (PLP) occurs post-amputation and can be debilitating and significantly decrease the quality of life, so that the painful and uncomfortable sensation in amputees occurs both in the limb and in the stump and, with the use of the technique of transcultural electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), it is sought to improve the condition of amputees and find an effective treatment for this complication that affects a significant number of people. Objective: The present study seeks to evaluate the action, efficacy and benefits of TENS in amputees with phantom limb pain. Methodology: This study is a systematic review of the literature with full indexed articles, written in English, Portuguese and Spanish, that related to the treatment of phantom limb pain and published in the last 15 years (2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019)(2020)(2021). Results and discussion: The studies showed that the use of TENS brought benefits to patients within a determined period of 1 year and, in some cases, there was reduced PLP in the stump and amputated limb. Conclusion: Transcultaneous electrical nerve stimulation proved to be a possible technique for the treatment and better understanding of phantom limb pain, but further in-depth studies are needed in order to develop TENS and increase its therapeutic applicability.
