A Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará é um exemplar da tipologia pavilhonar difundida pelos países europeus, durante o período do urbanismo sanitarista. O estudo do processo de construção deste modelo é essencial para a compreensão da história da saúde, em especial a sua aplicação em Belém. Este trabalho visa entender a anatomia deste complexo arquitetônico e seu crescimento ao longo das décadas, até alcançar a extensão e importância atual. Pretende-se discutir também sob a perspectiva de patrimônio cultural da saúde, sob os aspectos de uma instituição que funcionou como local de aprendizado para profissionais da saúde, desenvolvimento de pesquisas e vacinas, além do seu papel como hospital dedicado a assistência. Aborda-se também sua arquitetura, e os elementos que a compõem, e quais as modificações que foram e ainda são realizadas no conjunto. Além desses aspectos, objetiva-se compreender a partir do valor memorial e afetivo atribuído por seus usuários, aqueles que convivem e conviveram no hospital.
O Hospital Bom Jesus dos Pobres Enfermos foi erigido pelo Frei Caetano Brandão, tendo em vista a necessidade de acolhimento da população desvalida. O Hospital de Caridade possuía estrutura simples em contraste aos modelos coetâneos, mas realizava o cumprimento eficaz de sua função. Apesar de ter sido construído para ser um hospital, o Bom Jesus não possuía tipologia típica destes estabelecimentos, podendo ser equiparado às Misericórdias portuguesas, as quais raramente erigiram construções de raiz, pois instalavam-se em prédios preexistentes. Durante o período em que esteve sob diversas posses, o edifício passou por significativas modificações, o que, em conjunto com a escassez de documentação, contribuiu para o seu desaparecimento. Com o intuito de contribuir para a ativação da memória social a respeito dos edifícios assistenciais, propõe-se uma reconstituição gráfica da fachada do hospital, bem como de seus vizinhos, estimulando o entendimento destes enquanto patrimônio da saúde e da cidade de Belém.
O presente artigo traz à tona a discussão do uso da madeira na arquitetura amazônica contemporânea, a partir de suas qualidades e mais diversas formas de utilização. Ressalta-se que por muitos séculos a madeira apresentava-se como material nobre, sendo posteriormente ressignificado o seu uso, destinado principalmente a autoconstrução, priorizando-se então materiais cerâmicos, concretos e aços nas edificações atuais, sobretudo com o advento do modernismo. Porém, a partir dos estudos e concepções arquitetônicas vinculadas aos diversos regionalismos dos anos 1980, surge uma nova compreensão da arquitetura conectada ao seu local de origem. Estes propiciaram uma significativa produção arquitetônica utilizando-se a madeira, evidenciada nas obras de arquitetos amazônidas, com ênfase a Milton Monte e Severiano Porto.
