Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia del estado periodontal de los pacientes portadores de prótesis parcial removible que acudieron a la Clínica Dental Docente de la UPCH. Materiales y métodos: Diseño retrospectivo con universo conformado por pacientes portadores de prótesis parcial removible recepcionados por alumnos de pregrado. Resultados: Se incluyeron a 130 historias clínicas encontrando mayor prevalencia del género femenino (66.92%), con una edad media de 43.57 años. En el análisis univariado se encontró mayor prevalencia en la arcada inferior (61.54%), clase III de edentulismo (57.69%), estado gingival leve (55.38%), higiene oral deficiente (46.92%), ausencia de movilidad (91.54%), presencia de retención (88.46%), ausencia de recesión (79.23%), defecto de furcación (100%), estado malo de la PPR (73.85%) y estado periodontal enfermo (96.92%). En el análisis bivariado, se encontró relación entre las variables estado periodontal – clase de edentulismo y estado gingival – higiene oral; por otro lado no se encontró relación entre estado gingival – clase de edentulismo, estado de prótesis – estado gingival, estado periodontal – género, estado periodontal – arcada dentaria, recesión gingival – retención de placa, estado de prótesis – movilidad dentaria y estado periodontal – estado de prótesis. Conclusiones: Es de vital importancia realizar controles rigurosos del estado periodontal antes, durante y después de cualquier tratamiento realizado en la cavidad bucal, para garantizar su funcionalidad, longevidad y por ende bienestar al paciente.
Las tendencias demográfi cas a nivel mundial han demostrado un aumento de la población de adultos mayores,y en el Perú esa situación no es la excepción. Este fenómeno demográfi co plantea muchos retos en el campode la salud, uno de los cuales es la formación de profesionales especializados y comprometidos para atender aeste grupo etario. En el campo odontológico, el adulto mayor puede presentar múltiples enfermedades bucalescomo caries dental, enfermedad periodontal, lesiones en la mucosa oral, candidiasis e inclusive cáncer oral,siendo las más destacadas la caries dental y la enfermedad periodontal. Otras manifestaciones clínicas que seproducen en boca y que son muy frecuentes son la pérdida de hueso alveolar, movilidad dental y disminucióndel gusto que provocan disminución del apetito y, por consiguiente, la baja de peso e inclusive anemia. Porotro lado, es común que la población geriátrica presente una serie de complicaciones que han de ser abordadasconjuntamente por el odontólogo y el médico tratante. Este grupo poblacional padece enfermedades crónicascomo consecuencia del proceso natural de envejecimiento en el cual ocurren cambios o modifi caciones a nivelmolecular, celular, tisular y orgánico que contribuyen a la progresiva disminución de la capacidad del organismo para mantener su viabilidad. La presente revisión bibliográfi ca aporta las bases conceptuales del envejecimiento y las características bucales del paciente adulto mayor, lo cual va a permitir un mayor conocimiento del campode acción de la odontogeriatría y gerodontología.
