Innovativeness constitutes one of the core elements of modern ducation development. The phenomenon in question can be analysed in the context of the actions taken by each of the participants of the learning/teaching process. The paper is focused mostly on the teacher’s activity. On the basis of an empirical study, the Authors aim at defining the notion of an innovative teacher, and, more specifically, a language teacher.
Digital skills are an important part of the skills required in the 21st century, enabling users to better utilise information and communication technologies (ICT) in different spheres of life. This article examines the integration of these skills into foreign language teaching. The first part of the article studies the notion of digital skills through initiatives undertaken at the European and the national level as well as the current role of digital technology in the language classroom. The second part of the article focuses on the possible integration of digital skills with the development of productive language skills through active methods (collaborative learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning). The preliminary examination shows that the use of these teaching strategies could possibly ensure the parallel development of language and digital skill.
The subject of the article is a reflection on the supportive role of e-learning in language teaching. In the first section, the author presents a theoretical analysis of the possibilities offered by the distance learning method in foreign language teaching. That is followed by the description of empirical research aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of teaching foreign languages online and the possibilities such mode of instruction may offer. A pedagogical experiment carried out by the author delivered the qualitative and quantitative data, which allowed for comparing the results achieved by the students both whiles taught onsite and online. The aim of the experiment was to verify whether distance learning influences the way students develop their language skills, particularly their writing skills. The quantitative analysis was supplemented by the conclusions derived from the survey on chosen aspects of distance learning such as virtual communication, the role of a teacher and a student, skills obtained, strategies applied, as well as general strengths and weaknesses of such form of teaching. In a pilot study, the observed efficiency of on-campus and online methods was comparable. In turn, the main study showed slightly higher and statistically significant achievements in distance learning, but only among a specific group of learners. The research was also a source of some interesting observations regarding online education, especially the individualization of foreign language teaching and learning.
The purpose of this article is to examine the issue of interculturality in contemporary Francophone literatures in the language classroom. As a tool of a humanist and intercultural education, the purpose of which is based on the awareness of cultural diversity and dialogue with the alterity, the literary text thus becomes a mediator in the development of intercultural competence. To illustrate this hypothesis, three texts will serve as a reference for this purpose: Dans le ventre du Congo (2021) by Blaise Ndala which tells the story of the conflictual relationship between Belgium and the colonized Congo; Les Impatientes (2020) by Djaili Amadou Amal which evokes the problem of violence against Cameroonian women, while La dynastie des boiteux. Zoonomia (2018) by Bessora deals with the figure of a Reunionese naturalist explorer of colonized Africa.
Digital competences, involving the responsible and critical use of information and communication technologies in various areas of our lives, are today one of the key competences of the twenty-first century. In the face of the ongoing digital revolution, their importance in various fields of education is growing as well. The aim of the article is to show the role of digital competences in language education from the perspective of the modern generation – active users of modern technologies. Based on the theoretical aspects of the discussed issues, surveys were conducted the main goal of which was the analysis of personal opinions of learners (representatives of the digital natives community) on the role of digital competences in various activities of the glottodidactic process. The research was conducted among students of neophilological specialties of the bachelor’s programme at the University of Silesia. The scope of use and assessment of the usefulness of digital competences in the process of teaching-learning foreign languages and the definition and self-assessment of own e-skills was of particular interest. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the research material confirmed the important role of e-skills in developing both communication and language competences and learning strategies, also from the perspective of learners. Given the significant usefulness of digital competences in didactic activities, improving them is undoubtedly one of the priority tasks of modern education.
