Rosa damascena is very important for essential oil production, medicinal properties and it is also widely cultivated as a garden rose. The Rose species is mainly propagated by stem cutting. In the present study, the effect of different levels of 0, 500 and 1,000 mg l-1 (quick dip method for 20 s) of indole butyric acid (IBA) on the rooting of 12 wild genotypes (including: Kurdistan 1 to Kurdistan 12) of R. damascena was investigated. The results show that the rooting ability of R. damascena differs significantly between the twelve genotypes. The highest rooting (79.56%) and callus production (69.08%), number of roots (8.33), root fresh and dry weights (361.80 and 244.74 mg, respectively) were recorded in Kurdistan 5 genotype with 1,000 mg l-1 IBA. The maximum root length (5.84 cm) was observed in Kurdistan 5 genotype with 500 mg l-1 IBA that showed a significant difference compared to the control treatment (0.96 cm). The highest number of leaves per bud (7.33 at 500 mg l-1 IBA) and number of buds (5.00 at 1,000 mg l-1 IBA) were recorded in Kurdistan 1 genotype. The current study demonstrated that the different genotypes of R. damascena were in a difficult-toroot state, which suggests that cutting treatment with 1,000 mg l-1 IBA overcame the problem of the difficult-to-root state, and it can also enhance the rooting percentage in the studied genotypes.
In order to evaluate flower yield and essential oil content of Rosa damascena, 49 landraces were studied in a randomized complete block design with three replications in Sanandaj (Iran) during 2004-8. An analysis of variance revealed significant differences (p ≤ 0.01) for the number of flowers per plant, flower and petal weight, flower and petal yield per plant, essential oil ratio and essential oil yield per plant among landraces (G), years (Y) and for landrace × year (GY). The landraces of FA1, KR2, KR3, FA2, AR1 and YZ2 with 3291.9, 2526.4, 2298.7, 2239.8, 2077.6 and 1978 , respectively, produced the highest flower yield and the landraces of IS3, IS2, KR2, IS4 and FA2 with 413.25, 378.11, 364.31, , respectively, produced the highest essential oil among all of the landraces. In accordance to this, cluster analysis also classified high flower and essential oil yield landraces in distinct groups at an 87% similarity. According to the results, most landraces that originated from temperate, warm temperates and arid regions such as the FA2, YZ2 and Isfahan group of landraces produced higher flower yield and essential oil than those from cool, cool temperate, semi-arid and humid regions. Taking into consideration flower yield and essential oil, the landraces of KR2, YZ2, IS3, IS2 and FA2 with 2526.4, 1978.7, 1659.8, 1663.2 and 2239.10 g ha -1 essential oil, respectively, produced the highest flower yield and essential oil content among the landraces and are recommended for semi-temperate and cool areas.Ke y wor d s: essential oil, flower yield, medicinal plants, Rosa damascena Mill.
In the western and central parts of Iran, there are more than eight million female trees of Pistacia atlantica Desf. with approximately 20,000 tons of fruit oil production ability. In order to evaluate the influence of select ecological characteristics, fruit samples of seven P. atlantica habitats in Kurdistan (Iran) were collected in late October over two years . Fruit oil was extracted using soxhlet extraction. The results showed a relatively small variation in oil content in fruit across plants of P. atlantica. The fruit oil content ranged from 25.4% to 28.4%, with a mean of 27.3%. Most habitats belonged to temperate and semi-arid regions, with higher longitude and altitude but less latitude and slope, higher soil electrical conductivity, total neutralizing value, organic carbon and clay, medium yearly rainfall, evaporation and sunny hours and also trees with medium ages such as Borban and Kashtar producing higher fruit oil yield than those that belonged to cool and semi-humid regions. Cluster analysis classified habitats into four distinct groups at 50% similarity; four habitats belonging to forest areas were located in the first, Borban and Kashtar in the second and third and Abdolmomen, with the coldest climate and the oldest trees, was in the fourth group. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that habitats with low fruit oil showed extreme values of PC 1 and PC 2 but ones with high fruit oil were located mainly in the central zones of the bi plot, which suggest that habitats with medium ecological conditions produce higher fruit oil.Ke y wor d s: environmental conditions, fruit quality, habitat, pistachio tree
