Este trabalho apresenta uma nova abordagem usando Algoritmo Genético (AG) aplicado com a Teoria das Ondas Viajantes (TOV) como método automático de localização de faltas em linhas de transmissão. AG são rápidos em soluções otimizadas e automáticas e a TOV são bastantes utilizadas na localização de faltas em sinais de alta frequência. Este trabalho tem como objetivo utilizar AG e a TOV para a localização de faltas em linhas de transmissão com um terminal usando sinais transitórios de tensões. A natureza da pesquisa é aplicada, quantitativa e exploratória, com simulação computacional. O sinal de tensão analisado é simulado no software ATP e contem 8000 pontos, uma amostra de 2% dessa população é avaliada e evoluída pelo AG que busca soluções ótimas de como solucionar a função objetivo imposta. Foram encontradas as distâncias de faltas compatíveis com outras técnicas abordadas pela literatura. Diferente da grande maioria dessas técnicas, neste método apresentado, o AG localiza automaticamente a distância de falta. Utilizando 200 iterações, a ferramenta implementada localizou a distância para todos os tipos de falta, conseguiu encontra-las com um erro relativo máximo de 0,199% para faltas fase-terra e máximo de 0,756% para todos os outros tipos de faltas.
