Academic Skills (TASK), and grade point average (GPA) can predict a learning disability. The Pearson r was used to measure the relationship between ACT and TASK scores. A multivariate analysis of variance test and Wilks A test was used to measure differentiation between groups and support the utilization of discriminant analysis. It was found that the ACT can measure reading ability for incoming college freshmen and that, by using ACT, TASK scores, and GPA of incoming college freshmen, a prediction can be made of a learning disability with an 84% accuracy. It was concluded that further research was needed to determine generalizability of the findings to colleges and universities throughout the nation.
Everyone recognizes that the emotions play a major role in the development of our personality, the way in which we live, and how we relate to others. Yet, the emotions are virtually a neglected area in education. We teach reading, writing, and arithmetic; but, we seldom teach them in relation to the emotions. Some educators feel that school is not the appropriate environment to educate the emotions. They contend that the school years are a time to be devoted to intellectual development. At best, the emotions are discussed periodically in the classroom, but usually on a superficial level. If emotions are so important to human behavior, then why do we treat them like a disease? Maybe pragmatism is to blame for our dichotomous beliefs about emotion and academics. John Dewey (1939) made note of this many years ago when he stated that "the hard-and-fast impossible line which is supposed to exist between 'emotion' and 'scientific' language is a reflex of the gap which now exists between the intellectual and the emotional in human relations and activities." The development of the educational process through the past decade highly reflects this insurmountable gap.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
