Star akademski običaj, ki izhaja še od humanistov in korenini v rimski laudatio funebris, veleva, da se ob taki priložnosti pokojnega spomnimo s temeljitim popisom njegovega življenja in dela. To je lep običaj, toda pokojni profesor Gantar se take vrste lavdaciji izmika. Longum est, bi se najbrž izrazil Cicero. Vendar ni samo to, da bi bilo treba nanizati preveč dejstev. Kronološkemu popisu dosežkov se ta zapuščina, zdaj ko jo gledamo kot celoto, izmika tudi zato, ker ob vsej raznolikosti učinkuje kot eno -s Horacijevimi besedami simplex et unum. Če bi se lotil popisa dejanj in dosežkov, nalog in časti, torej kariere profesorja klasične filologije in prevajalca, to ne bi bil zvest opis celote, ki je za njim ostala. Delo, ki je pred nami, nam je zapustil nekdo, ki je bil po poklicu filolog, v Enijevem prevodu dicti studiosus, vendar redke in neznačilne vrste. Tak, ki so mu bila minuciozna orodja filologije ključ do nečesa veliko večjega. Za opis tega »večjega« bom uporabil besede, ki ne bi smele učinkovati staromodno in patetično. Kajetanu Gantarju je bila filologija ključ do starodavne lepote in modrosti. A dodati je treba še nekaj. Izkušnja lepote in modrosti je po svojem naravnem značaju kontemplativna. Nekaj te kontemplativne odmaknjenosti je profesor Gantar nedvomno imel. Vendar je vabila k posnemanju. Poleg tega se je, če si smem dovoliti to karakterno oznako, družila z nenavadno prizemljenostjo, z realističnim občutkom za zunanjo stvarnost, in to onkraj vseh generacijskih pregrad. O tem vedno znova pričajo najmlajši člani njegove družine. O tem lahko poročamo tudi tisti, ki smo imeli redko srečo, da je prihajal med nas v predavalnico kot živa priča neke tistočletja stare resničnosti -tamkajšnji in obenem povsem tukajšnji. Tudi vsi, ki te sreče niso imeli, pa so lahko v njegovih prevodih antičnih klasikov zaslutili življenjsko
V mnogih stoletjih se je zvrstilo že nešteto ugibanj o tern, kdo so pravzaprav bile elegične ljubimke. Te skrivnostne opevane ženske so se v rimski elegiji razkrivale v najrazličnejših podobah, ki pa so praviloma dovolj zabrisane in zastrte, včasih celo kontradiktorne, da s svojo neprepoznavnostjo burijo bralčevo domišljijo. So bile junakinje rimske ljubezenske elegije resnično le meretrices, osvobojenke, ženske nižjega rodu, kot kažejo nekateri namigi v posameznih elegičnih pesmih, ali pa je bila ta krinka le običajen, tako rekoč predpisan pesniški obrazec, ki naj bi po eni strani bralce in poslušalce ljubezenske poezije pritegnil z vznemirljivostjo prepovedanega sadu, po drugi pa pesnike, ki so morda kršili uveljavljene moraine norme ali pa kot ljubljenci rimskega občinstva k takim kršitvam spodbujali, zavaroval pred ostrimi sankcijami Avgustove zakonodaje?
Motiv o Salmakidi in Hermafroditu, o spojitvi ženske in moškega v dvospolno telo, sodi med raritete antične mitološke zakladnice. Odstopa tudi od prevladujočega vsebinskega vzorca v Ovidijevih Metamorfozah: tokrat nimfa izjemoma ni žrtev posilstva, ampak storilka nasilnega dejanja nad moškim. Ni ugotovljivo, odkod je Ovidij ta motiv povzel, ali pa si ga je izmislil sam, kot domnevajo nekateri komentatorji, vendar hermafrodite pred njim omenja že Diodor Sicilski.

Z rame je snela svoj tul in zrahljala je lok upogljivi; zleknjena tam je ležala na zemlji, preraščeni s travo, 420 živo poslikani tul si je dala pod tilnik za vzglavje.Čim jo je Jupiter videl takó brez zaščite in trudno, rekel je: »tole prešuštvo bom zlahka prikril pred soprogo, če bo pa zvedela, joj, me bo znova zasula z očitki!« videz Dianin nadene si brž in še njeno opravo. 425 »O, ti mladenka iz mojega spremstva, le kam na vrhove danes odšla si na lov?« jo povpraša. Mladenka se dvigne s trate, rekoč: »Pozdravljena, moja boginja, častim te bolj kakor Jupitra naj me kar sliši, če hoče!« veselo bog se reži, ko posluša, da sam je bolj cenjen od sebe. 430 že jo nič plaho poljublja, kot sploh ne pritiče devici.
