Together with its astrological text, the figurative zodiac of a Fulda manuscript from around 800 (Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, F III 15a) appears as the oldest known manuscript testimony of this type of iconography. Particularities of text and illustrations of the zodiacal signs - especially those of the Gemini - suggest that they have not been copied directly from ancient sources, but rather from models transmitted by precarolingian monastic communities. Several figures of the pictorial series to which the zodiac belongs point to the British isles.
