Lo scenario contemporaneo č caratterizzato da radicali trasformazioni sia dei processi di produzione della conoscenza, sia del lavoro che sottopongono il rapporto tra i due termini a critiche e revisioni profonde. Nonostante i diversi punti di vista, l'imperativo volto alla costruzione di una societŕ ed un'economia della conoscenza si traduce sovente in politiche che enfatizzano il ruolo strumentale dell'educazione nei confronti della crescita economica, cosě come nello stesso tempo il lavoro č sottoposto a processi di trasformazione che ne indeboliscono il rapporto con la cittadinanza. La centralitŕ della conoscenza nei processi sociali ed economici chiama in causa la qualitŕ del sistema scolastico e formativo e la qualitŕ del lavoro e della sua organizzazione: č quindi necessario sviluppare una prospettiva critica che ponga in evidenza nuovi terreni di confronto, di potenzialitŕ e di rischi nel rapporto tra sistema formativo e mondo del lavoro. In tale prospettiva č introdotta la relazione tra processi di apprendimento e traiettorie lavorative, illustrando alcune tra le principali direzioni di ricerca connesse a tali questioni.
