Resumo Este trabalho reflete sobre o crescimento vertical por autoconstrução da favela Nova Jaguaré, como resultado da apropriação irregular de espaços não edificados, nos interstícios de empreendimentos de habitação de interesse social implantados na gleba no período de 2014 a 2019. Apresenta informações cartográficas que identificam novas ocupações e usos situados em áreas de interstícios de empreendimentos de habitação social já implantados no local e é um estudo qualitativo, utilizando análises bibliográficas com base nas obras de autores como Reinhard Goethert, Pedro Abramo, Samuel Jaramillo, Nabil Bonduki, Rem Koolhaas, entre outros, além de dados obtidos através de levantamentos in loco e entrevistas realizadas com líderes comunitários. Se apoia no conceito de Incremental Housing, entendido como a construção habitacional progressiva, construída em fases, como um dos elementos que propiciam a ocupação e a exploração imobiliária de áreas degradadas. Como resultado aponta que tais ocupações são reflexo de diversos fatores, entre eles: fatores socioeconômicos, incluindo precarização do mercado de trabalho; a necessidade de viabilizar um melhor acesso à infraestrutura urbana; a facilidade de negociações em um mercado informal, além da necessidade/possibilidade de gerar um incremento no orçamento familiar através da autoconstrução.
