COVID-19 affected some facets of daily lives including politics, finances, and education. Increasingly, educational institutes turned to online education following the pandemic. Due to this sudden shift, the stakeholders were not ready to fulfill the outcomes and face the challenges that it brought. Foreign language teaching context poses separate challenges to the learners and the teachers due to limited language input and output. Considering the significance of teachers and the effect of teacher education on student achievement, this study focuses on the reflections of teacher candidates on online language teaching practices in an EFL context. The participants attended an online practicum course where they observed online English classes offered at the high school level for 14 weeks and designed tasks to improve pedagogical practices. By analyzing the reflections and the tasks designed for language teaching, the study offers the challenges of online EFL classes and presents practical tasks to address them. The study also offers implications for online language teacher education.
This study touched upon a current issue; online education offered during the pandemic: Pre-service teachers' observations of the EBA lessons offered via online platform to the students were focused on. In that context, the pre-service teachers' reflections on the EBA TV English lessons in K12 were examined. To describe the offered online teaching process and reveal the good and problematic sides as well as to have the suggestions for better practices, the reflection-on-action approach was adopted and the participants' critical reflections were analyzed through the qualitative case study. The overall results indicated that the participants appreciated some of the practices in EBA lessons while they were mostly critical to material and activity choices. As for the overall evaluation, they were also emphasized the lack of interaction as the disadvantage of the online education, particularly for language learning. The suggestions to improve the teaching practices on this platform were explained.
Öğretmen olma yolculuğunda staj uygulamaları süreci büyük bir önem arz etmektedir. Staj uygulamasında, öğretmen adaylarının belirli sınıf prosedürlerini tamamlamaları ve lisans programının teorik ve pratik bileşenleri arasında bir bağlantı kurmaları gerekir. Araştırmalar, öğretmen adaylarının profesyonel olmaları için bu sürecin son derece yararlı olduğunu gösterse de bu süreç sorunsuz değildir. Bu bağlamda, yaygın olarak yaşanan sorunlar tespit edilerek, hizmet öncesi öğretmen eğitimi geliştirilebilir. Bu çalışma, Türkiye'deki İngilizce Öğretmenliği bölümlerindeki uygulama uygulamalarının ortak zorluklarını harmanlamak için yapılmıştır. Çalışma, literatürdeki 40 çalışmayı belirledikten sonra kodlama prosedürleri ile literatürde bahsedilen zorlukları analiz etmiş ve kategorilere ayırmıştır. Beş ana kategori ve 36 alt kategori belirlenmiştir. Analiz, zorlukların (1) öğretmen adayları, (2) öğretmenler, (3) uygulama öğretim elemanları, (4) öğrenciler ve ( 5) okul yöneticileri tarafından belirlendiğini göstermektedir. Uygulama öğretim elemanları ve öğretmenlerinden geri bildirim alınması, öğretmen adaylarının sınıf yönetimi, okullar ve Eğitim fakülteleri arasındaki iş birliği eksikliği, teori ile uygulama arasındaki boşluk ve hedef dil problemleri tekrarlayan sorunlar olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Lisans seviyesinde öğretmen eğitimindeki staj uygulama süreçlerinin tekrar eden sorunları araştırılmış, bu zorlukların üstesinden gelmek için öneriler ve öğretmen eğitimi uygulamalarının iyileştirilmesi için çıkarımlar literatür incelenerek belirtilmiştir.
