Congenital central nervous system (CNS) malformations are relatively rare conditions present in fetuses that may result in intrauterine fetal deaths (IUFDs). We report a case of a 42-year-old female who presented at 29 weeks gestation with lack of a fetal heart beat likely due to a congenital malformation resulting in IUFD. This case report and literature review provides a better understanding of the encephalocele as a harbinger for IUFD.
Moraxella osleonsis (M.osleonsis) is an organism that rarely presents with bacteremia in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of an immunocompetent 59-year-old male with a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection that developed M.osleonsis bacteremia. We believe that SARS-CoV-2 infection may have played a role in developing M.osleonsis bacteremia in this patient and may be one of the first reported cases of such bacteremia in a COVID-19 patient.
Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) and primary renal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are both rare conditions that can present very similarly in a patient with renal staghorn calculi. We report a case of a 54year-old male who presented with fatigue, vomiting and significant acute weight loss. The patient was initially believed to have XGP, but was ultimately diagnosed with both XGP and primary renal SCC. This case report and literature review is meant to elucidate the similarities and differences between XGP and primary renal SCC as both can be diagnostically challenging.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
