THE Latin text, collected from many sources, is rather difficult for those who are just beginning to translate. The first twenty lessons have an interlinear translation, from which words which have already occurred are omitted. There is an abundance of illustrations, some of which are very helpful in giving an idea of various antiquities, while others have to be interpreted in the light of the text, and possess little merit, archaeological or artistic. If any system has been consistently followed in marking the few long vowels whose quantity is indicated, it is certainly beyond the reach of the average mind to comprehend and apply it. The "grammar" is quite incomplete, having nothing on pronunciation, quantity of vowels, accent, and similar subjects. FRANK A. GALLUP COLGATE ACADEMY Hamilton, N. Y. New Higher Algebra.
