In dit artikel worden de bepaling van de colostrale immunoglobuline (Ig) G-concentratie bij runderen van het Belgisch witblauwe ras en een onderzoek naar het verband met de serologische status tegenover helminth-infecties (i.e. Ostertagia ostertagi en Fasciola hepatica) beschreven. In de bespreking wordt vervolgens dieper ingegaan op bekende koe-en omgevingsfactoren die de colostrumkwaliteit kunnen beïnvloeden. De colostrale IgG-concentraties werden bepaald bij 103 runderen en vertoonden een grote variatie. De meerderheid van de onderzochte colostra had een lage (≤ 25 mg/ml; 36%) of matige IgG-concentratie (26-50 mg/ml; 31%) en slechts 33% had een IgG-concentratie die als voldoende beschouwd wordt (> 50 mg/ml). Deze variatie stond niet significant in verband met de serologische status tegenover helminthinfecties. Factoren met een bekende invloed op de colostrumkwaliteit kunnen onderverdeeld worden in koegebonden factoren (leeftijd, genetische invloeden, ziekte), seizoen, klimaat en managementsfactoren (lactatie-en droogstandmanagement, voeding, temperatuur en het toedienen van hormonen en vaccins). De kennis van deze factoren kan aangewend worden om de colostrumverstrekking te verbeteren.
