Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) honey can be characterized by a greenish yellow color and an intense flavor with a bitter aftertaste. Because cornflower honey contains only a limited amount of pollen for the verification of its floral origin, one objective was the characterization of its polyphenol and norisoprenoid contents to assign floral markers. Here, lumichrome (18.8-43.5 mg/kg), 7-carboxylumichrome, (Z/E)-3-oxo-retro-α-ionol, and 3-oxo-α-ionol appeared to be quite suitable for distinguishing cornflower honey from other unifloral honeys. Additionally, due to its comparably high hydrogen peroxide content (0.5-0.9 mM/h) and the associated antibacterial activity, cornflower honey was used as an alternative treatment of digital dermatitis on an organic dairy farm. Cows affected by this hoof disease often show severe lameness and a subsequent decline in milk yield and loss of body condition. The cows' hooves treated with cornflower honey showed significantly faster healing than the control group without any treatment.
The objective of the study was to determine the effect of nutrition level (NL, multiples of maintenance energy requirement) on the digestibility of nutrients for dairy cows regarding the energy supply of the animal. The digestion of nutrients and energy was investigated in two trials using lactating dairy cows. The NL varied from 2.7 to 5.0 using diets similar composition. In addition, sheep were given the same feed with a NL of 1.4. Digestibility of dry matter (DM) and all specific measures of dietary components declined significantly as NL increased. Digestibility of energy decreased by 4.1% for each increase in NL. The metabolizable energy, the ability to metabolize energy (metabolizable energy/gross energy), and the content of net energy for lactation (NE(L)) per kilogram of DM intake were calculated for NL from 1 to 6 on the basis of these relationships and as well as the gross energy, methane energy, and urine energy. Accordingly the NEL content declined by 0.11 MJ/kg of DM intake or 1.6% as the NL increased by one unit. It means that the NE(L) requirement above the maintenance requirement increased by 0.07 MJ of NE(L) per kilogram of fat-corrected milk, if the NL increased by one unit.
Inclemency of weather frequently causes critical water contents in cereal grains above 15%. Ensiling in pre-mature condition may be an alternative to other techniques of preservation. Aim of this study was to compare apparent total tract digestibility (D(t) ; barley, wheat, triticale, rye) of proximate nutrients and pre-caecal digestibility (D(pc); barley, wheat) of amino acids (AA), respectively, from cereal grains in ensiled and almost dry condition. Moistly harvested cereal grains (67-73% dry matter) were milled through a 4-mm sieve and ensiled with lactic acid bacteria (LAB, 3 × 10(5) colony forming units/g Lactobacillus plantarum DSMZ 8862 and 8866). To investigate D(t), two trials were conducted with six Mini-Lewe pigs and four German Landrace pigs, respectively. D(pc) of AA was determined using four German Landrace pigs with ileo-rectal anastomosis. D(t) of proximate nutrients did not differ between cereal grains and their silages, except for ether extract, which was more digestible in ensiled than dry wheat, triticale and rye (p < 0.05). Lysine content was lower in ensiled than dry barley and wheat. In barley, ensiling was accompanied by reduced D(pc) of lysine and histidine (p < 0.05). In wheat, ensiling increased D(pc) of lysine, methionine, threonine and leucin (p < 0.05). Ensiling of pre-mature cereal grains with LAB can serve as a reasonable storage alternative. However, as limited data are yet available, further research is required to understand completely the impact of ensiling on nutritional value as indicated, for example, by the lysine content and the D(pc) of certain AA.
