African American men are at an increasingly high risk of experiencing psychological disturbances. Strategies for establishing effective therapeutic relationships with these clients are provided in the literature. Notably absent are empirical data pertaining to the effectiveness of psychotherapy with African American men. This article reviews the literature on psychotherapy and proposes an agenda for the next decade of research with African American male clients.
The delinquent personality is frequently conceptualized as being marked by a high degree of impulsivity. Two empirical studies are discussed, which, taken together, contradict the hypothesis that delinquent behavior is related to im pulsivity and suggest that the existing measures of impulsivity do not tap the same dimension.
Three agencies which evidenced different strategies for providing services to retarded clients were examined. Employees of an agency which had implemented a community-oriented strategy demonstrated the highest levels of job satisfaction and task involvement. Significant differences were found on four of eight job-design variables; however, methodological difficulties made interpretation of these differences difficult. The results were viewed as consistent with the hypothesis that different service delivery strategies are associated with differences in jobs, satisfactions, and task involvement.
It was hypothesized that job design is systematically related to employee satisfaction. The job design variables included were: variety, task-identity, feedback, autonomy participation, learning, and information. Subjects were 137 professional and nonprofessional employees of 22 agencies providing services to children. Agencies included mental health facilities, visiting nurse associations, residential care settings, and foster placement and adoption agencies. The hypothesis was supported. The correlations between specific jog design variables and work satisfaction were examined.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
