Background: India is not only growing in terms of population but also developing in terms of communication. Internet has become an essential tool for education, entertainment, communication and sharing of information. Excessive and undisciplined use of internet has led to emergence of internet addiction (IA), especially among students. The objective of the study was to know the magnitude of internet addiction among medical students and to determine the factors associated with it.Methods: The present cross sectional study was carried out over a period of two months among 138 medical students of SSIMS and RC Davangere. Data was collected using a pre designed, pretested questionnaire, with questions adapted from Young’s internet addiction questionnaire to test internet addiction. Results: In our study 30% students had mild internet addiction and 10% had moderate internet addiction. Male gender, internet usage of more than 5 hours per day and expenditure on the monthly internet pack of more than Rs. 400 were found to be significantly associated with internet addiction. Conclusions: More than one third of the students, especially males had internet addiction. It is essential for the parents and institutions to supervise the medical students and limit the time as well as expenditure on the internet usage.
Background: Morbidity and lack of health facility especially in the first five years of life would cause irreparable damage. Therefore it is important to assess the magnitude of morbidities, and their health seeking behaviour. The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of acute morbidities and their associated factors among Under-five (U5) children residing in slums of Davanagere city, Karnataka, and to assess the health-seeking behaviour of their mothers/caregiversMethods: It was a cross sectional study done in the slums of Davanagere city during August-September 2016. Using 30 cluster sampling technique, the estimated sample size was 656. A total of 22 children were included in each cluster. Questionnaire consisting of demographic details, history of acute morbidities in the past two weeks and their treatment details was administered to the mother/caregiver. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel sheet and analyzed using SPSS Version 20.Results: Totally 656 mothers/caregivers of U5 children were contacted, majority of the children were in the age group of 13 to 60 months. Total of 348 (53%) children suffered from some acute morbidity in the past 2 weeks, of whom 282 (81%) children were taken to some health care facility, and majority preferred private practitioner (73.4%). Most common reason for poor health seeking behaviour was “following the medicines which were prescribed for previous illness”.Conclusions: More than half of the children suffered from some acute morbidity in the past 2 weeks and 81% of them were taken to health care facility.
Background: Good nutrition and dietary behavior are important during adolescence to achieve full growth potential and appropriate body composition and to promote health and well-being. Thus, the present study was conducted in order to assess the nutritional status and its influencing factors among the school going adolescents. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among the school going adolescents (Class V to Class X) in the rural field practice area of Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumkur from June 2015 to May 2016. Representative sample was drawn proportionately from each of the strata (school, class and gender). Anthropometric measurements, dietary assessment and clinical examination of study participants were made, and other information was collected using semi structured questionnaire. BMI-for-age and height-for-age were considered as the indicators and WHO Anthroplus software was used to calculate and assess the nutritional status. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 16.Results: The prevalence of thinness and stunting were 32.3% and 25.8% respectively. The prevalence of overweight was 4.8%. The risk of malnutrition was significantly high among adolescents from BPL families, larger family size and the birth order of three and more (p <0.05).Conclusions: There is an immediate need to address the high burden of under-nutrition in adolescents of both sexes in schools by routine annual monitoring of nutritional status, appropriate management of affected child, providing nutritional counselling for underweight adolescents.
