The spatial genetic structures of three French natural beech stands were analysed using polymorphic enzyme loci. Two methods were used: F-statistics and spatial autocorrelation statistics. Within these stands where self-fertilization rate is 0, a low heterozygote deficit was observed which may be due to a moderate level of mating between relatives. However, no increase of this deficit was observed from one generation to the next. The spatial genetic structuring was low. Within one open stand composed of several patches, founder events are invoked to explain a significant autocorrelation. Within the two other stands, both dense, results are similar to those produced by simulations of an isolation by distance model. The genetic structure seems not to be stable in space and time which may be due to (i) a limited number of generations; (ii) an effective gene flow less limited than hypothesized; and (iii) fertility differences or phenological incompatibilities between individuals.
Growth is analysed both in ordinary and twisted beeches located in Verzy near Reims, France. Most variables of annual and multiannual growth are the same in the two types of trees. Stems in the twisted tree are markedly sinuous from the moment they begin to develop and remain so, whereas in the ordinary tree the sinuosities are attenuated and then the stems are straightened, right from the first years of development. In the ordinary tree, the straightening of the stems is regulated at the level of the ramified branches and the crown; this regulation establishes a strict hierarchy among the stems according to the order of the stems in the ramification. However, in the twisted beech, this regulation is absent and consequently sinuous stems are not straightened, lateral stems stand up, and reiterations start. Therefore, the frame of the ordinary tree is simple and only composed of one morphogenetic sequence before metamorphosis whereas frame development in the twisted tree consists of several sequences. Key words: morphology, architecture, Verzy, twisted beech, Fagus sylvatica var. tortuosa.

Can. J. Bot. 69: 2225-2231. Resource allocations in plants can be estimated to study biomass distribution in the various organs during a vegetative cycle. Six isolated Europeen beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) of the same age were chosen within a station characterized by homogeneous ecological conditions: 229 annual shoots located on equivalent first order axes in the ramification were analysed to describe the distribution of dry material in leaves and stipules (for maintenance), in the axis (for present growth), in buds (for future growth), in infructescences (for female reproduction), and in male inflorescences (for male reproduction). The discrimination between acquisitions and allocations, which correspond to two different but complementary realities, is discussed. Development strategies are different between long and short vegetative shoots; the first one favours growth to explore the environment while the latter favours the maintenance to exploit it. When these two kinds of shoots flower and have additional resources, these new acquisitions are profitable both to vegetative and reproductive functions in short shoots, whereas a competition occur...
