In the research project Madeira a meshed network management system based on P2P technologies was developed. Event though, up to date, security has always been neglected in this field of research despite the sensitivity of such systems and the high number of security threats that affect them, Madeira incorporates a security solution aimed at minimizing the identified highest-priority risks on all levels. This solution introduces a distributed certification authority based on threshold cryptography, certificate revocation list distribution points and a collaborative accusation protocol aimed at uncovering hosts that exhibit illegal or unwanted behaviour while avoiding false accusations from a malicious node.
The Madeira project investigates the application of peer-to-peer technologies to distributed network management. It allows network elements to self-configure and self-heal by autonomously performing management tasks in cooperation with other peers. Madeira features a NorthBound Interface that enables communications with external systems. The Madeira NorthBound Interface uses Web Services technology provided by the Apache Pubscribe toolkit. It has been successfully assessed by means of specific tests and experiments verifying all functional requirements. Non functional aspects such as reliability, robustness, security, scalability and dependability have also been validated with quite satisfactory results. XML parsing has been found to represent the main limit to scalability. Several approaches to further improve the dependability of the interface are proposed in the paper.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
