Purpose This paper aims to present the qualitative findings on students’ and teachers’ experiences in communicating and interacting with students and teachers from different ethnic backgrounds in the Malaysian vision schools initiative. Design/methodology/approach Face-to-face interviews were conducted involving 15 informants comprising of three headteachers, three teachers and nine students. The interviews centred on the informants’ experiences and views living and experiencing the reality of the vision schools which is comprising three major races; Malays, Chinese and Indians; which is represented by the three school types which are a national school, Chinese vernacular and Indian vernacular schools. Findings The interview data revealed that the intercultural communication in the vision schools had triggered intercultural understanding and awareness of cultural diversity in the schools. However, the interview data with experienced teachers showed some drawbacks of the intercultural dynamics at the school complex. Among the weaknesses were the absence of structured and formal training on intercultural and multicultural education, lack of trust and poor social skills which may have hindered effective intercultural communication from taking place. Originality/value This study presents the informants’ experiences and views on the reality of intercultural interaction among students and teachers in the context of the Malaysian vision school initiative.
The empirical study objective was twofold; first to survey the degree to which university staff perceive on the use of talent management instituted a meaningful practice at universities of central region in Uganda; secondly it focused on testing the suitability of the dimension in terms of reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity; and measurement equivalence for both working experience, and gender of university staff. The sample covered 808 university staff from six universities in the Central Region of Uganda in the year 2016. Data collection was done using a self-reported 24-item questionnaire so as to determine how the university staff perceive the construct of talent management practices. The Survey tool was distributed by the researcher and researcher assistants to volunteers in the six universities that participated in this study. The outcomes of the study reinforced, illuminated and gave a deeper insight into the results of previous studies on the same subject which has been infused in the university business and strategy. The study furthermore found evidence of validity and reliability for a multidimensional construct of talent management practices. Also, the measurement for working experience proved variant whereas gender was invariant. The findings of the study will be help stakeholders to contrive informed suggestions towards decision making for developing and retaining university staff to towards university effective performance, and is a source of information and knowledge to future research in the same area.
This study highlights teachers' involvement in professional development (PD) activities teachers in the Darussalam Modern Islamic Boarding School (DMIBS), East Java, Indonesia. It evaluates the implementation of PD programs by identifying teachers` perception toward PD they participated in. The study used a survey research approach to investigate professional development and the level of teacher`s self-efficacy at the boarding school. The majority of teachers have a high level of satisfaction toward the implementation of PD activities in DMIBS in terms of course content, instructor, relevancy to teaching practice and course management. Also, teachers reported that the school had given them an adequate opportunity to participate in different types of PD activities. However, the study did not find significant differences between the length of teaching experience and teachers' academic qualifications in teachers` perceptions towards PD activities. Some studies found that teachers with higher levels of academic qualification, showed higher and increased levels of efficacy. However, the current study did not show similar results as teachers with degrees and DMIBS qualifications respectively showed no significant differences in their levels of efficacy. This indicates that having different academic qualifications did not affect the increase in teachers` efficacy.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to present teachers' perspectives on leadership practices and motivation in the context of Islamic private schools in Songkhla, a southern province of Thailand. Design/methodology/approach -A survey method was employed to collect data from teachers in six selected Islamic private schools in Songkhla. Findings -The statistical data indicate that teachers' motivation is significantly related to principals' transformational leadership practices, as perceived by teachers. It was found that though teachers perceive their principals exhibited transformational leadership more frequently than transactional leadership, the principals are viewed to display more idealized influence (IIB & IIA) and inspirational motivation (IM) rather than individual consideration (IC) and intellectual stimulation (IS) practices. To strengthen teachers' motivation in schools, they should exhibit the individual consideration (IC) and intellectual stimulation practices more frequently. Research limitations/implications -This research only focuses on selected Islamic private schools in Songkhla, a southern province of Thailand. Originality/value -The implementation of the Islamic private schools is unique to Muslims in southern Thailand. The views and perspectives of the teachers and administrators are beneficial in moving to the next level of the policy.
Research objective: The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between sustainable leadership, talent management and organizational health as predictors of university transformation. This study went further to establish the mediation effect of organizational health as a mediating factor between the exogenous variables (sustainable leadership and talent management) and endogenous variable (university transformation). Research technique and methodology:The study used a cross sectional survey design and the sample of respondents (N=820) was randomly chosen from six universities in which the central region of Uganda. The sample was deemed convenient for this study since the method used for data analysis was structural equation modelling that normally requires a big number of sample population. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to analyze each of the individual constructs used to attain reasonable parameters estimates. The fully fledged structural equation modelling (SEM) was used in the study to analyze the hypothesized structural model and its casual relationships plus the mediation effect between the constructs. Main findings:The findings of the study showed that there is positive relationship between sustainable leadership, talent management and organizational health. However, the relationship between sustainable leadership and university transformation, talent management and university transformation were negatively related. 33Practical implications: It was recommended to educational practitioners, lecturers and policy makers to use this model to harness university transformation. For researchers, it could be used to do further examination of university transformation on other universities both locally and internationally.
