Bilim ve teknoloji alanında yaşanan hızlı ilerlemelerin yanı sıra sosyal, siyasal ve ekonomik nedenlerden dolayı toplum hayatında ortaya çıkan değişimler bireylerin farklı açılardan yetkin olmasını sağlayacak beceriler kazanmalarını gerektirmektedir. 21. yüzyıl becerileri olarak adlandırılan bu yetkinlik alanları eleştirel düşünme, yaratıcılık, iletişim kurma, dayanışma ve bilişim teknolojilerini kullanabilme gibi çeşitli davranışları içerir. Türkiye’de sayısı giderek artan uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkçe öğrenirken 21. yüzyıl becerilerini kazanmaları ve geliştirmelerine katkıda bulunacak çeşitli imkân ve ortamlar yaratmak mümkündür. Öğrenme ve öğretme sürecinin en önemli bileşenlerinden biri olan ders kitapları gerek anadil gerekse yabancı dil öğretiminde önemli işlevlere sahiptir. Bu nedenle, ders kitapları öğrencileri hayata hazırlayacak şekilde hazırlanmalıdır. Bu araştırmada yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretiminde kullanılan İstanbul Yabancılar İçin Türkçe setinde yer alan metinler ve dilsel etkinlikler 21. yüzyıl becerilerine yönelik olma özelliği açısından incelenmiştir. Çalışmada 21. yüzyıl yeterlilik alanları 21. yüzyıl temaları ve 21. yüzyıl becerileri olarak iki ana sınıflandırma altında ele alınmış ve söz konusu kitap setinde yer alan metinler ile temel dil becerilerine yönelik dilsel etkinlikler bu çerçevede incelenmiştir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesi yöntemi kullanılarak tüm dil düzeylerindeki metinler ve etkinlikler 21. yüzyıl beceri türlerinin varlığı, sıklığı ve dağılımı açısından betimlenmiştir. Elde edilen bulguların incelenmesi sonucunda 21. yüzyıl temalarının yer alması bakımından metinlerde dengeli bir dağılım olmadığı; 21. yüzyıl becerilerinin dilsel becerilere göre yönelik etkinliklerde yer alması bakımından ise alımlama becerileri ile üretme becerilerine eşit ölçüde yer verilmediği görülmüştür.
