Objective:LGBT individuals, who have been ignored for years, constitute an important group in the world and in our country. These individuals are often exposed to adverse circumstances such as discrimination, prejudice, physical, emotional and sexual violence and challenges in accessing healthcare services. These situations directly and indirectly affect both them and the society to which they belong. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the knowledge, opinions and attitudes of midwifery students about LGBT.
Method:The universe of the study was composed of a total of 298 students studying at the Midwifery Department of Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Health Sciences. 223 students (74,8% of the universe), who have agreed to participate in the study composed the sample of the research. During the research, a 28-questions questionnaire and " The Homosexuality Attitude Scale (HAS)" were administered to the students. The data were analysed using SPSS 21.0 statistical software package.Findings: According to the results of the study; more than half of the students knew the definitions of lesbian, gay and bisexual concepts, but they had no idea about the meaning of the word 'transgender'. Most of the students think that sexual orientation is a choice and may change through treatment or therapy. Almost all of the students participated in the study stated that there is a prejudice against homosexuals in society. It is expected that the findings obtained from this study will contribute to midwifery education and to future studies in this field.
