This study aimed to determine epistemological beliefs of teacher candidates. For this aim, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 56 teacher candidates. The interviews were recorded and records related to epistemological beliefs were transcribed, and then descriptive analyses were conducted. The results of the analyses revealed three main belief dimension. Regarding the first dimension, the candidates associated between learning and effort, and they thought that the innate ability would improve via effort; as for the second dimension, the majority thought that knowledge construction process is slow and a relative concept; and regarding the third dimension, most of the teacher candidates were of three different perspectives - knowledge absolutely changes, it changes based on the field and it doesn't change. Also, most of the candidates stated that words possess more than one meaning, people attribute meanings to words on the basis of their experiences, and there is not only one true answer to scientific problems, since knowledge changes in time and scientists propose different solutions to problems.
Several studies revealing that students who receive traditional instruction indicate more interest in lessons in which active learning methods are employed have been conducted. This research aimed to determine the effect of drama-assisted teaching activities on university students’ achievements in Electrostatics concepts in Physics-2 class. For this purpose, instruction supported with the drama method was employed in addition to traditional teaching. The study followed a quasi-experimental research design with a control group, and the participants of the study were 83 second year students who studied at an Education Faculty, in the west of Turkey. To collect data, an Electrostatics Concept Test and a Drama Method Attitude Scale were used. As a result of the research, regarding the concept test, scores of the experimental group supported with drama-assisted instruction were significantly higher than the control group. It was found that the experimental group drama attitude mean score was 78.9% positive. According to the results of the research, drama alone is not a magic wand like Harry Potter's wand, but it is a more successful method than traditional methods.
ABSTRACTIn this study, "Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle Unit" was instructed with traditional teaching and drama method. In the 2014-2015 academic year, 44 7th Grade students enrolled in a public school in Balıkesir participated in the study. Quasiexperimental research design with pre-test/post-test control group was used. As the data collection tools; Our World and Universe Conception test and semi-structured interview questions were used. According to the analysis, the students who were instructed with drama method scored significantly higher in the tests than control group students that received traditional teaching. In addition, as for gender, male students' post tests scores of the drama group were significantly higher than the male students' post tests scores in the control group.
