Accurate detection and classification of breast cancer is a critical task in medical imaging due to the complexity of breast tissues. Due to automatic feature extraction ability, deep learning methods have been successfully applied in different areas, especially in the field of medical imaging. In this study, a novel patchbased deep learning method called Pa-DBN-BC is proposed to detect and classify breast cancer on histopathology images using the Deep Belief Network (DBN). Features are extracted through an unsupervised pre-training and supervised fine-tuning phase. The network automatically extracts features from image patches. Logistic regression is used to classify the patches from histopathology images. The features extracted from the patches are fed to the model as input and the model presents the result as a probability matrix as either a positive sample (cancer) or a negative sample (background). The proposed model is trained and tested on the whole slide histopathology image dataset having images from four different data cohorts and achieved an accuracy of 86%. Consequently, the proposed method is better than the traditional ones, as it automatically learns the best possible features and experimental results show that the model outperformed the previously proposed deep learning methods.
Increasing waste generation has become a significant issue over the globe due to the rapid increase in urbanization and industrialization. In the literature, many issues that have a direct impact on the increase of waste and the improper disposal of waste have been investigated. Most of the existing work in the literature has focused on providing a cost-efficient solution for the monitoring of garbage collection system using the Internet of Things (IoT). Though an IoT-based solution provides the real-time monitoring of a garbage collection system, it is limited to control the spreading of overspill and bad odor blowout gasses. The poor and inadequate disposal of waste produces toxic gases, and radiation in the environment has adverse effects on human health, the greenhouse system, and global warming. While considering the importance of air pollutants, it is imperative to monitor and forecast the concentration of air pollutants in addition to the management of the waste. In this paper, we present and IoT-based smart bin using a machine and deep learning model to manage the disposal of garbage and to forecast the air pollutant present in the surrounding bin environment. The smart bin is connected to an IoT-based server, the Google Cloud Server (GCP), which performs the computation necessary for predicting the status of the bin and for forecasting air quality based on real-time data. We experimented with a traditional model (k-nearest neighbors algorithm (k-NN) and logistic reg) and a non-traditional (long short term memory (LSTM) network-based deep learning) algorithm for the creation of alert messages regarding bin status and forecasting the amount of air pollutant carbon monoxide (CO) present in the air at a specific instance. The recalls of logistic regression and k-NN algorithm is 79% and 83%, respectively, in a real-time testing environment for predicting the status of the bin. The accuracy of modified LSTM and simple LSTM models is 90% and 88%, respectively, to predict the future concentration of gases present in the air. The system resulted in a delay of 4 s in the creation and transmission of the alert message to a sanitary worker. The system provided the real-time monitoring of garbage levels along with notifications from the alert mechanism. The proposed works provide improved accuracy by utilizing machine learning as compared to existing solutions based on simple approaches.
Recent research on single-image super-resolution (SISR) using deep convolutional neural networks has made a breakthrough and achieved tremendous performance. Despite their significant progress, numerous convolutional neural networks (CNN) are limited in practical applications, owing to the requirement of the heavy computational cost of the model. This paper proposes a multi-path network for SISR, known as multi-path deep CNN with residual inception network for single image super-resolution. In detail, a residual/ResNet block with an Inception block supports the main framework of the entire network architecture. In addition, remove the batch normalization layer from the residual network (ResNet) block and max-pooling layer from the Inception block to further reduce the number of parameters to preventing the over-fitting problem during the training. Moreover, a conventional rectified linear unit (ReLU) is replaced with Leaky ReLU activation function to speed up the training process. Specifically, we propose a novel two upscale module, which adopts three paths to upscale the features by jointly using deconvolution and upsampling layers, instead of using single deconvolution layer or upsampling layer alone. The extensive experimental results on image super-resolution (SR) using five publicly available test datasets, which show that the proposed model not only attains the higher score of peak signal-to-noise ratio/structural similarity index matrix (PSNR/SSIM) but also enables faster and more efficient calculations against the existing image SR methods. For instance, we improved our method in terms of overall PSNR on the SET5 dataset with challenging upscale factor 8× as 1.88 dB over the baseline bicubic method and reduced computational cost in terms of number of parameters 62% by deeply-recursive convolutional neural network (DRCN) method.
Nitrogen doping with carbon material substantially enhances the electrochemical properties in lithium and sodium batteries. However, direct treating at high temperature fails to create high nitrogen content, thus limiting the morphological as well as electrochemical performances. Herein, a hydrophilic material xanthan and acid‐treated melamine are doped by a dual process of hydrothermal and carbonization, enabling high nitrogen content (28%) carbon spheres. The highly defected nanosphere structures (ID/IG = 1.14) enable the high specific surface area of 388 m2 g−1, which facilitates a large number of lithium/sodium ions and gives rise to remarkable electrochemical performances. When applied as an anode, the nitrogen‐doped porous sphere xanthan (NPS‐XAN) delivers a superior discharge capacity of 390 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1 for lithium anode and maintains a discharge capacity of 262 mAh g−1 after 2800 cycles at 1 A g−1 for sodium anode. This work signifies superior capacity anodes for Li/Na‐ion batteries and contributes to the long‐life cycling energy application.
In the last two decades electricity shortage has hampered the economic growth of Pakistan. To overcome these crises, thermal power plants were commissioned to bridge the supply and demand gap. Deployment of thermal power generation resulted in an unsustainable energy mix with the higher cost of generation. In the last decade, policymakers have shown considerable interest in deploying renewable energy generally and wind energy particularly. Therefore, this paper evaluates some important drivers and barriers to wind power generation. SWOT-Delphi approach with Relative Importance Index (RII) analysis has been applied. The results show that the deployment of wind power can enhance energy security and environmental sustainability. Major barriers to wind energy are the presence of competitive energy resources, policy implications, and poor grid infrastructure. With this contrasting environment, the evaluation of drivers and barriers of wind power are insightful for formulating sustainable energy planning strategies for future generation mix.
Modern industrial systems are growing day by day and unlikely their complexity is also increasing. On the other hand, the design and operations have become a key focus of the researchers in order to improve the production system. To cope up with these chellenges, the data-driven technique like principal component analysis (PCA) is famous to assist the working systems. A data in bulk quanitity from the sensor measurements are often available in such industrial systems. Considering the modern industrial systems and their economic benifits, the fault diagnostic techniqes have been deeply studied. For example, the techniques that consider the process data as the key element. In this paper, the faults have been detected with the data-driven approach using PCA. In particular, the faults have been detected by using and statistics. In this process, PCA projects large data into smaller dimensions. Additionally it also preserves all the important information of process. In order to understand the impact of the technique, Tennessee Eastman chemical plant is considerd for the performance evaluation.
The router plays an important role in communication among different processing cores in on-chip networks. Technology scaling on one hand has enabled the designers to integrate multiple processing components on a single chip; on the other hand, it becomes the reason for faults. A generic router consists of the buffers and pipeline stages. A single fault may result in an undesirable situation of degraded performance or a whole chip may stop working. Therefore, it is necessary to provide permanent fault tolerance to all the components of the router. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that can tolerate permanent faults that occur in the router. We exploit the fault-tolerant techniques of resource sharing and paring between components for the input port unit and routing computation (RC) unit, the resource borrowing for virtual channel allocator (VA) and multiple paths for switch allocator (SA) and crossbar (XB). The experimental results and analysis show that the proposed mechanism enhances the reliability of the router architecture towards permanent faults at the cost of 29% area overhead. The proposed router architecture achieves the highest Silicon Protection Factor (SPF) metric, which is 24.8 as compared to the state-of-the-art fault-tolerant architectures. It incurs an increase in latency for SPLASH2 and PARSEC benchmark traffics, which is minimal as compared to the baseline router.
