This chapter focuses on crises and disasters in the European alpine tourism industry and the new requirements for the management of potential crises and disasters (including natural disasters). Results are presented from a questionnaire survey of tourism organizations (n=121) in the Tyrol and Alto Adige regions and the alpine part of Bavaria. The questionnaire was designed to: review actual experiences of respondents with crises; assess the impact on the destination; identify respondents' awareness and personal evaluation of risk and potential crises or disasters; and identify how crisis management activities were undertaken in their organizations. Results show, among others, a lack of crisis awareness within the alpine region and a lack of clear responsibility for crisis management.
