Wheat is one of the most important cereal crops of the world and is a staple food for about one third of the world’s population. Despite the significant area of wheat production in the country, the mean national yield 1.3 t ha-1 is 24% below than mean yield for Africa and 48% below than global mean yield. A field experiment was carried out at Senegal and Selmamer during 2014 cropping season to determine the effects of sowing methods and seed rate on yield of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Treatments were two sowing methods namely row planting and broadcasting with six Seed rate (kg/ha): 125, 150, 175, 200, 225 and 250 kg/ha.The experimental was laid in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with thee replications. The study result depicted that sowing method and seed rate had brought significant effect on the yield of bread wheat. The maximum grain yield of 3.9 t ha-1 and the minimum 2.7 t ha-1 were obtained from seed rate of 125 kg ha-1 and 200 kg ha-1 respectively. And the maximum grain yield of 3.5 t ha-1 was obtained from row planting and the least 3.13 t ha-1 was recorded from broadcast method; from these output we can conclude that, using of seed rate of 125 kg ha-1 and row planting is advisable for bread wheat production in the Senegal and Senmamer kebeles and their vicinities to increased wheat production and productivity.
Onion varieties were evaluated for adaptability to the climatic conditions in South Ari woreda. Three varieties of onion were planted under a complete randomized block design experiment with three replications at research field in Jinka Agricultural research Center (South Ari woreda of South Omo zone SNNPRS of Ethiopia). The quantitative data on bulb yield, plant height, bulb size and number of leaves of onion varieties were collected. All the varieties were harvested at their maturity (90% tops down) and then weighed. Statistical methods were used for data analysis where by analysis of variance was applied. It was concluded that the three varieties (treatment) combinations, namely Adama red, Nasick red and contribute similarly to the total yield, plant height, number of leaves and bulb size. The variety local was the best onion variety as it produced the highest bulb yield of 3.3167 kg/plot numerically. Based on varietal characteristics of relative bulb size, good yield, easy availability of seeds and cheaper price of seeds in the local market, we recommend farmers to use local variety followed by Nasick red and Adama red therefore, government should promote these onion varieties for cultivation in South Ari especially for jinka and its vicinity. Government can import to ensure the availability of Local and Nasick red varieties so that farmers can be motivated for adoption of these varieties for commercial production. The effects of different planting dates on the yield of onion varieties can be considered for future research.
A field experiment was carried out for two successive cropping seasons in 2017 and 2018 at Shama Bulket, Semen Ari Woreda, South Omo Zone, Southern Ethiopia, to determine optimum seed rate and inter-row spacing for food barley production. The experiment involved a factorial combination of three seed rates (80, 100 and 120 kg ha-1) and three inter-row spacing (20, 30 and 40 cm). The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results indicated the treatments had significant effect in all parameters except plant height and spike length. Based on the result of this study, use of 30 cm inter-row spacing and 120 kg ha-1 seed rate is superior in grain yield (4481 kg ha-1) and total biomass (14.6 t ha-1). Therefore, use of 30 cm inter row spacing with seeding rate of 120 kg ha-1 can be recommended for food barley production at Shama Bulket kebele and its vicinity.
