Este artigo investiga o impacto do movimento revolucionário de 1930 no cotidiano carcerário da Casa de Detenção do Recife. Tão logo o golpe de estado foi perpetrado na capital pernambucana emergiu, por meio de diferentes modais, uma crescente manifestação de adesão ao governo do interventor federal Carlos de Lima Cavalcanti por parte dos presos comuns. Ao investigar a contiguidade entre a conjuntura política e o cotidiano prisional sustentamos que as dinâmicas cotidianas de acomodação e conflito estavam conectadas aos eventos políticos situados além dos muros da instituição. Por meio de um processo de apropriação, o cotidiano da prisão é apresentado pelos sob o prisma do vocabulário político empregado pelos aliancistas antes da Revolução a fim de obter melhorias concretas para os presos.
Punição, regeneração e autonomia: aspectos do trabalho prisional vistos a partir da fuga do "preto Thomaz" (Recife, 1868) Punishment, regeneration and autonomy: aspects of the prison work seen from the escape of the "black Thomaz" (Recife, 1868) Aurélio de Moura Britto * Resumo: Este artigo versa sobre o trabalho prisional no contexto da reforma prisional do império brasileiro, contexto em que ele é reputado pelas elites administrativas como um mecanismo de punição e, concomitantemente, instrumento de regeneração moral do criminoso. Entretanto, para além das prescrições regulamentares e dos discursos da elite administrativa-ou seja, ao nível de sua implementação cotidiana-as práticas laborais atuaram como suporte de autonomia dos presos, muitas vezes esboroando outras diretrizes que compunham a reforma prisional. Este debate será conduzido a partir da experiência da Casa de Detenção do Recife, na gestão do administrador Rufino Augusto de Almeida (1861-1875) e se deterá em um estudo de caso.
O propósito deste artigo é investigar as dinâmicas do trabalho prisional na Casa de Detenção do Recife durante o século XIX. Manuseando diversas fontes primárias, buscamos avançar para além da retórica dos gestores e dos regulamentos prisionais e enfatizar alguns aspectos do trabalho prisional como a possibilidade dos detentos transitarem fora do perímetro das instituições prisionais, quando da execução de algumas das suas atividades laborais. Não raro, essa modalidade de trabalho conferia aos presos uma vivência menos isolada do que se supunha e permitia uma experiência de “liberdade parcelar”. A observação dos presos em suasandanças pela cidade permite dimensionar os fluxos que atravessavam e interligavam a sociedade recifense e o universo do encarceramento e sublinhar as inúmeras implicações dessa contiguidade para o cotidiano prisional. No que concerne ao recorte cronológico, nossa observação está circunscrita à gestão de Rufino de Almeida (1861-1875).
A pretensão deste artigo é demonstrar como os detentos da Casa de Detenção do Recife utilizaram da prática da escrita como forma de tornar público o que reputavam como as irregularidades perpetradas na gestão administrador Rufino Augusto de Almeida (1861- 1875). Deste modo, aqui não enfatizamos as dinâmicas internas de funcionamento da instituição, suas rotinas cotidianas e regulamentos. Nosso desígnio é delinear como determinadas redes políticas externas à instituição e as fissuras institucionais permitiram aos presos remeter às autoridades provinciais e aos jornais de oposição seus queixumes, burlando de um modo ardiloso um conjunto de determinações regulamentares vigentes. Por outro lado, nos interessa perceber as questões que as cartas tematizavam e suas possíveis implicações sociais. Assim, o artigo se abastece na perspectiva histográfica pela qual é premente analisar as conexões e contiguidades entre prisão e sociedade, mapeando suas articulações e interfaces.
